flowmaster 80 vs. stock
flowmaster 80 vs. stock
hi all, been reading through these boards and searching and been looking for replacement muffler for my 89 GTA without doing a whole catback system. im under the impression that the flowmaster 80 is the easiest install. i just got one question, is the flowmaster 80 noticeably louder than my stock exhaust on my GTA which is fairly loud at the moment? or is there something else under 100 which will provide more dbs. If i have to replace my muffler i just want to get a little extra noise while im at it. thanks in advance for any information you can give me. been listening to some exhuast sounds on the net but most are with headers and such... thanks much

Yea the 80 will definetly make it louder. Its really not all that loud but its a better sound than stock too. It might also have to do with how good re pipes are that your not replaceing. I put an 80 on my car completely stock with thestock I pipe and cat which were both shot, it didnt make it any louder. I went back and bought a new cat and a new i pipe and it definetly got louder after that. It sounded realy good and loud just revin it in park or neutral but driving it sounded better just not all that loud. Its much louder compared to stock at idle, but once you get up in the rpms it just kinda dronned out and wasnt that loud.
If you dont care about keeping dual tailpipes and you just want strait up loud just put in a cherry bomb or dynomax bullet in the stock place with a singe tail or just a turndown at the end of the muffler. Now that will be loud!
Just last week i took off the 80 and stuck a cherry bomb on there with just a turndown so it exits right behind the tire, it's 10x louder than the 80.
* Also if your looking for cheap my cherry bomb was 19.99, the turndown was like 5 bucks and 2 new clamps for 2 dollars each, it took my about and hour to get the flowmaster off and clamp up the new muffler and turndown

If you want to keep the dual outlets, I'd say the 80 series is your best bet. You will get a nice increase in sound also. If you don't care about the dual outlets, there are other options that will give you more noise. Such as a Bullet or Flowmaster 40 series.

I hated the droning and resonance.
I actually went back to stock muffler.
With my new 89 I am gonna try magnaflow.

On my Z28, the stock exhaust was louder IN the car than the Flowmaster was. You can definately hear the car outside, but inside it is quieter.

I've heard Flowmaster mufflers are among the worst flowing on the market, if not THE worst. If you've ever seen inside one, you'd know what I mean. There was a test (it's on ls1tech somewhere) that showed a stock 4thgen SS/WS6 muffler flowing MORE than a flowmaster 80s series crossflow. I've never noticed a difference in performance with a flowmaster on any of my vehicles (well, never a GOOD difference anyway)
There are many other alternatives.

I have the 80 series on my 84 Trans Am and I am very happy with it. The stock muffler sounded pretty good but with the 80 series you can definitely here the difference. It sounds really good when you wind it up in neutral or get on it from a stoplight. On the highway it just purrs.

I had a 80-series on my '89 RS stocker and it sounded pretty sweet. It didn't sound as good as say a Mustang GT with flowmaster 40's, but then again the Camaro's don't have true duals - YYARRGHH!!! Anyway, before I yanked the old driveline I'd give the FM80 an "A" for effort. It sounded WWAAY better than stock, inside and out. Since I'm a sound-junkie, I actually enjoyed the droning sound way more than the metallic fizzle of the original stock stuffler. As far as performance goes, C'man - it was a stock '89 RS with over 200K and a gutless yeller TBI 305 - it woulda took a MIRACLE to get anything more than a squeek from the rear tire with the hammer down on greased lightnin! BUT, the FM80 didn't slow it down any more than it already was. PLUS, since the FM80's MADE for this car, it already has the dual outlets in the right place. If you go with a 40 series or pretty much any other muffler, you're gonna have a single outlet unless you weld on a dual outlet with two 180-degree bends and an extra 90-degree to get it all the way to the other side of the car. Just a matter of preference, but these cars don't look right with one fat pipe sticking out one side of the car. If that other guy already sold his 80-series or the deal falls through, lemme know 'cause I got the one from my car sitting in the garage collecting cobb-webbs!

2 1/2" duals sounds soooooo much better. JMO

Does anybody have any opinions on the Edelbrock 3" cat-back system?

I would love to know where anyone found Flowmasters 80 series for $40.00...I paid $120 and that was the lowest I found anywhere.

I've actually owned 3 of these mufflers, the other two I gave away for free.

If you get the 80 Series, I recommend going with the 3" in 2 1/2" out 43083 as it's a smaller and better sounding muffler over the other versions available.

i had the 80 series on my car for 3 years... 3inch in 3inch dual outs. sounded good. not too overally loud but had a nice tone. good idle
now i went powerstick chambered tube.. and its FAR better in sound and flow. i noticed a difference right off the bat. i'd place one of these in the I pipe and fab up twin exits out the back, if you like the tail pipes laying out behind the bumper. thats what i like and what i'll get eventually

I had an 80 series on my v6 and it sounded terrible. One time I had a guy in a bmw drive by me and yell "get a muffler!" and I was only turning 3k. I'll never do that again. Especially on my ta, which is an automatic.
