Smog Pump Operation Related Question

My understanding of the whole AIR system is that:

Air is pumping into the exhaust manifold while the engine is cold and once the engine heats up enough, air is no longer pumped into the manifold at all but rather into the CAT.

So here is my question:

Couldnt one just remove all the exhaust manifold stuff and that ugly valve that gets in the way of everything. Then, hook a pipe DIRECTLY going from the CAT to the PUMP ?

My whole issue with the AIR system is that it gets in the way of everything, but if u just had a single pipe running from the pump into the cat, that wouldnt be so bad.

So aside from legal and environmental stuff, my question is, would it work?

Axle/Gears: bunch of 10 bolts how scary is that
Just remove it if its in the way. Its a cheater system....nothing that makes your exhaust any cleaner.

Oh its already removed. Im justing thinking when I go to retake my emissions test considering I failed the first time (with the system intact!), I could throw the pump on the belt quick and rig a line right into the cat, then rip it off again once I hopefully pass. Would take all of 15 minutes to put the pump back in place and rig a line straight to the cat.

BTW I think I failed emissions the first time because the engine was running pretty cold and my timing might be off.

I've read lots of people passing the test without smog pumps.
