Inspection Question in NJ

I failed inspection for one reason being an exhaust leak. How do they determine this? By ear? Because there definately is a ticking noise. Or is it by some sort of UV light?
I passed emissions (partly due to this leak). When I take it back for re-inspection, will they re-test me for emissions?
I need to get this addressed ASAP, please.
