B4C vs SSP options

Here's a question. Spent a day at the KY state fair this weekend and when walking by the state police exhibit I noticed they had an early 90's mustang on display with the rest of their old trooper cars. I had to take a double take because I saw what looked like a roll bar. Upon closer inspection, I was right. a 4-pt bar, and a 5-speed (which wasn't surprising, just nice to think that some trooper got to have fun while patroling). But the roll bar was interesting to me, did any of the B4C's get equipped with roll bars? From my research the Mustang SSP (special service package) came with some standard options but different departments could request special options such as a roll bar, power windows, etc.

Just curious. For reference, here is a car like what I was talking about. You can see the bars coming down the back window.

Subscribing!

I'd be interested in seeing this comparison. Here in CT there were dozens of the Mustang 5.0 notch backs, quite a few Grand National T-types and just a couple of the Camaros.

Thread about the second car posted - looks like a 6 point cage, halo bars come down at dash. http://www.specialservicemustang.net...ead.php?t=3587

Re: B4C vs SSP options

The Mustang was not as "beefy" as the Camaro. The Mustang was much lighter and I think it was not much bigger than a Chevette If memory serves. My College Girlfriend had a 79 Capri Turbo that was gussied up like an 87 GT, always thought was cramped in there... My Firebird was much more roomy..

Re: B4C vs SSP options

I remember they had to add bracing to the floor pans in the Mustangs - repeated hard launches would crack them pretty badly.

Yeah, no doubt that the mustangs were smaller, a friend of mine had one in high school. So anyone know if chevrolet offered roll cages in theirs?

Re: B4C vs SSP options

Back in the early 90's my Girlfriend's stepdad worked for C&C, and he said they were making Convertible Mustangs at the time. When they would make the convertible, he said they would literally break the car, then weld it back together and reinforce it. He said, you could hear this loud POW! everywhere in the plant when they did it.

The Players cars had Roll cages, but I do not believe they were "Factory" installed, but I might be wrong. I do not believe that any factory Camaro or Firebird came with the roll-cage with the exception of the Firehawk.

Oh wow. Ok cool, it's just interesting to see the differences in cars that were built for the same purpose.

Re: B4C vs SSP options

Lotsa Colorado B4C's had roll bars installed....Vintage Racer just sold the CHP EVOC car that had a roll bar installed by CHP. To my knowledge no SSP or B4C left the factory with a roll bar....all were installed by agencies.

Re: B4C vs SSP options

The 80's Mustang is so ugly, I am still in awe they sold more than 100 of them over the period. There is nothing that makes it stand out as being special, there are no lines, nothing... Now the 2005+ Mustangs I could grove on... But nothing from about 1974-2004...

Great car Ron Reece, I was at Vintage Racer's house when it had been delivered before the resto.....super original and historic car for the B4C's.

Re: B4C vs SSP options

Not sure what they had in your state, but I can still remember ripping down the highway in the late 80's with one of those lit up behind me!

CT was all 5.0 Mustangs and Grand Nationals for pursuit cars! The Crown Vic's were around to clean up the messes.

Re: B4C vs SSP options

My father was driving a 1985 Toyota MR2 from NJ to CT back in the 80s. He saw a line of cars cruising the left lane at high speed, so he was waiting for the Corvette, Mustang and Camaro IROC-Z to pass so he could get in line and cruise with them. As the IROC-Z was passing him, my father looked over and saw that it was a State Trooper. He decided not to jump in and follow, as all of the above were pulled over, once they passed him! Those were the good ol' days.
