worthwhile to paint exhaust?
worthwhile to paint exhaust?
Anyone taken the time to paint their exhaust?
I just got my new American Thunder Catback and am deciding if it would be beneficial to throw a few coats of VHT on to keep it from rusting.
anyone else done it?

the flowmaster catbacks are aluminized so they are already coated for corrosion resistance.

well, i mean, i've painted my stuff black before to conceal it, but it doesn't need anything to prevent corrosion unless it's not already coated from the manufacturer.

aluminized or not it will rust anyways, regardless of paint it will eventually flake off. The aluminized coating will last longer than any paint you can put on, but the coating wont last forever. Exhaust will rust. unless you have a stainless steel exhaust (ss will still corrode just at a slower rate) you will always run into some corrosion.
The funniest thing is to coat steel with aluminum since that causes corrosion on its own. You will see iron oxidation (rust) before you see the galvanic corrosion (chemical reaction of mixing two dissimilar metals)
so in a nut shell... let sleeping dogs lie. i have an aluminized cat back too.

ive got aluminized pipes on mine and they have held up very very well. i painted my muffler with high temp aluminum color and it held up pretty well.
i also painted my eldelbrock tes headers with rostoleum high heat paint, well i think it was rustoleum i cant remember, but it has held up on the headers alot better than i thought. i figured the paint would wear off after a day of driving but it has been over 3 months and the headers still look good. the y-pipe doesnt though b/c it was pretty rough.
