borla XR-1?
trying to get a straight through muffler that would still do decent muffling. how does the xr-1 do for that?
is there another muffler that uses stainless packing (preferably not ceramic but if need be might be able to do) that is straight through and can be bought in 2 1/2 in out centered design that will quite a little better?

No straight through muffler (resonator or packed muffler) will do much, if anything, for muffling. If you want something small like that and will actually quiet down the exhaust, a 1 chamber muffler (flowmaster, magnaflow, spintech, etc) would probably suit you best.
A straight through resonator or packed muffler is just a straight pipe that tones the sound, but doesn't do anything to quiet it.

absorption style mufflers still do muffler a little bit at least. as far as a chambered muffler I'm not too fond of how they sound that much.

What they mainly do is keep it managable under light throttle. Under WOT it does nothing really.

i had XR-1 borlas and they dont do anything for toning down sound....and they are pretty much the same as dynatechs, except the XR-1's are borlas so they will cost more....these arent that loud though compared to many straight thru mufflers.....and the sound imo is pretty nice, i had the 3' in/out and as far as position i had them right under the passenger side where the cat was and had dual cats right after the shorty headers....space sucked so i got rid of them...but honestly dont get the borlas...just get the dynatech unless you have money.....

what is the dynatech sound packing made out of. more or less I'm just looking for the quietest straight through muffler under $150 that is hopefully fully stainless packing and has a 2 1/2 in/out
where areyou guys finding these dynatechs. all I found was the catback designs.

I have that muffler on my Trans Am. It is pretty loud, mostly under WOT and heavy part throttle. Plus, I swear it got a little louder after being on there for a while. I don't drive mine every day, so I wouldn't want a daily driver with this muffler. Depends on what you want, there are a lot of options out there for mufflers. Try to find one you like, and don't worry about what everyone else thinks.
Another thing, if your car is 'cat delete' it'll be even louder. Just a few things to think about.
Good luck

well you can find Dynatech on Jegs, Summitracing.com, a few on ebay....also if you want something similar to a straight thru design...i have not tried it nor read on anyone in this website..but you can look into the Dynomax Ultra-Flo....it looks pretty nice...they have 3 designs to choose from 2 are basically the same..only difference is the case (Ultra-flo SS and Ultra-flo welded performance) the other one though looks interesting...it is a perforated "X pipe" inside a muffler....looks neat...thats the Ultra flo X performance...anyways...just some choices to the regular straight thru design mufflers....and cheaper by the way..around 80-90 bucks compared to the Borla (110 starting) and forgot about the price for dynatech..i think 60... my two cents....

maybe wouldn't be so bad if it was a rearward muffler but being it is right after the header I'm wondering how long it would last if I get on the throttle good as I have seen my header glow a few times after short run at WOT during the night.

if your headers are glowing, its either running extremely rich or you have a lean condition.
either way, your slowing the car down.
good luck with the tune.

the plain fiberglass sad this is won't be fine. it was tried once in this situation and it didn't last right after the header.

I am running an XR-1 right now, 3" / 3" , I think it sounds great... Nice and crisp sound, when at WOT, it is LOUD though..still sounds really good, but it is loud.
