anyone have problems with edelbrock TES?
so, when i got my edelbrocks, they looked awesome. i was so jazzed to put them on i called in sick to work. i get them almost done, and i come to find out that the last header bolt on the passenger side didnt go through the flange because the flange didnt line up with that hole. it wasnt even built long enough. all the other bolts went in fine and dandy. did this happen to yours? so i wanted to put the Y pipe on to see if i would have to send that back as well, or keep it and just get the headers. the y pipe didnt clear the suspension. the back mount on the lower A arm. what the heck? any thoughts? summit is gladly taking them back and they are paying the shipping. but is this what im to expect from edelbrock, if so no thanks. how many have the hooker 2055's? should i be expecting to send those back to?what do you guys think? thanks for the input.

I put the coated TES on my 88, fit was darn near perfect. Very close and tight in a couple areas but that was to be expected with this deal I thought. The Y pipe was really tight but it did work when I got everything bolted up. I've read about that last bolt deal but mine went right in, must be a difference in heads? From what I've read on here some also have problems with the Hookers getting them to fit. Sure makes it tough since we sure can't modify the pipes ourselves so they either fit, or they don't, and it's no fun getting them installed in a third gen car anyway.

i had edelbrock's on my car for about a year. the only problem that i had is that i think they are one of the biggest rip offs i have seen. i was totally disappointed in the quailty and fit/finish. i will never, ever buy another piece of exhaust made by edelbrock (the rest of their stuff is great in my experience). this was back in 2000 - not sure if they have upgraded their quality since then.
the flanges were tiny, the tubes were not round the whole length (they were "squished" at some points), and the welds looked like they were done by a 12-year old. the flanges and the welds really were a deal-breaker for me. and, after they got up to temperature, the paint flaked off and they turned white, and made a mess. i know that's hard to get away from with headers, but still - left a bad taste in my mouth.
i got rid of them, and got SLP's 1-3/4" w/o AIR. the quality difference was absolutely amazing. the flanges on the SLPs were literall 2-3 times thicker, the tubes were actual circles (not ovals) throughout their entire length, and the welds were flawless (and pretty beefy, too). Also, they are stainless, so they look great. (i have since had them coated, but even before that, they looked good)
take a look at my page in my signature for some info on the SLPs if interested. i have some good pictures, etc.

I have owned these header s for about 8 years now and they have done their job.
Pros-->
1. The coating doesnt faid or discolor
2. They are smog legal
3. Is a benefit over stock exhaust (how much of an increase in power is relative but you will feel a diffrence)
4. They are the shorty style so they do retain the low - mid range torque that would be lost with long tube headers (again how much gain is relative to your setup and inversly if you got the long tube headers you will gain top end but loss some low end just depends on your build... please dont think that this gain or loss is dramatic ... its a factor that should be considered with the build of the motor and your intentions of your vehicle)
ok now here we go with the
Cons----->
1. That last header bolt on the passenger side is absolutely rediculous to get to and if you have your AC still in you must possition your self just right and work with your open end wrench under the car mind you with turns of about 1/4 max every time oh that one realy got to me especialy when the bolt falls out and you have to start all over and dont forget if your bolting them up to aluminum heads ANTI SEIZE is a must. Take it from me not knowing this I ended up having to toss heli coils all the way around
2. If you are using a larger than stock oil pan (6 quarts and up) good luck fitting the y pipe in between the oil pan and the crossmember. I had a moroso 6quart pan and that pipe rattled so much (even after I got it reduced to a smaller diameter then i even rapped i up with header rap and mashed it up in there) that it rattled 6 pan bolts completely out of their respective holes!
3. Clearence is so so tight especialy when dealing with plugs ... its under the car every time though i suspect this is teh case with mose headers for our cars thanks to that over abundant room in our engine bay! Passenger side gets rather tight...
4. Dont forget you have to tighten those flanges at the y pipe. Yea I remember that being a test of patience because you have to tighten them bit by bit then rotate the flange to get to the other side
The right tools are the key with these headers
5. You have to become creative in routing your plug wires. I had to make all my wires custom since they had to be longer to clear those headers. I would usualy route them hugging the block then around by the tranny but lately I ve been pulling them up through the header pipes and as long as you pull them tight this is the best way to go.
6. The finish is rather dull ... I was expecting some kind of luster for $550 but nada
Dont get me wrong they do the job that they are intended to do. Now can they have been better designed? yes Is this a reason why you should ditch them ... no now that yo u have them just stick with it ... be patient. Now if you want to get a set that are l 3/4 inch then thats a diffrent story I think only slp and Dyno Don offer sets that are of this diameter. IF i had to do it all over again it would most definately be SLP or Don's set.... HANDS DOWN.
