Sound is a matter of individual taste. Personally, I think mine is too loud and I don't like the tone. My neighbor thinks it's great. I also understand they don't flow that well.
If your car is otherwise stock, I wouldn't recommend changing the muffler. The whole exhaust is terrible, and changing the muffler is like putting a regular straw around a coffee stirrer and expecting to be able to suck more milkshake through the coffee stirrer.

i like the sound...
My 1990 305 is completely stock except for a K&N and a Flowmaster 80 Series. A lot of people can not stand Flowmaster sound but I love it and have gotten a lot of compliments on it. It is a very aggressive tone even thought the rest of the exhaust is stock and is loud but not enough to get you in trouble. HTH!

what he is saying is that you should change the piping to complement the muffler.. the coffee stirrer is your stock exhaust, and the straw is your after market exhaust.. if you combine them both, you still suck threw the coffee stirrer and not get the results you want.. but, if you are JUST looking for sound, change the muffler.. go for it.. if you want performance to match the sound, change the whole system

if you want to and have money, go with the whole cat back and a high flow cat no doubt,
if money is an issue, go with a force pro series muffler from jegs, aluminized and fully welded case and other then that, basically a flowmaster muffler, except its $35 and has a BETTER build quality
