Hedman hedder setup - right thing to do?

Hi there,

I'm building quite a healthy 350 for my 89 Firebird. I'm expecting the engine to put out 400+ horses.

Now I first wanted to go with the Hooker 2055 but the price is kind of high.

So I looked into some other companies and found this setup from Hedman:

For the Y-Pipe I found HED 17470
and for the Hedders HED 68460.

Does anyone on here have experience with the Hedman stuff? Is it even going to fit flush to my firebird with the single Catalytic converter?

Or should I stick to the Hookers?

Not 100% sure, but I think the Heddman y-pipe 17470 was meant for their shorty hedders- 68470. At least that's the way it's listed at Summit and Jegs. Anyway, that's the set-up I plan to use, but if you have not bought anything yet, I'd go with the Hookers. I didn't go that route cause I couldn't afford it at the time.

The y pipe wont fit around anything larger that the stock oil pan.
any headers and y pipe wont be a direct fit to any of your stock exhaust.
I have the y pipe and it was not even close and had to be completely reconfigured to work. by the way those headers are not shortys and the ypipe is made for the shortys.

Yeah, I just saw that. Hooker vs. Hedman: My Problem is, I am a little on a budget but I still want to get the best for my bucks.

rjt76, what was there you had to do? It seems that tsibouky did not have problems with the fitting, right? How comes?

Talking about the stock oilpan: I am planning to get a Moroso oil pan. Guess it's not gonna fit?

Re: Hedman hedder setup - right thing to do?

I run the 68470's and 17470 y-pipe. Good headers, the y-pipe needs some assembly, so you can play with it a bit. It comes with a clamp you can use, or you can weld it. This way it fits up real nice.

I'm using a stock pan, but yea it's tight, so if you run a big aftermarket oil pan it won't fit.

They also would have hit my hotchkiss SFC's, so I chopped the Y where it goes to 2.5", and welded on a 3" bend a little closer to clear the SFC's.

They're good headers, the paint on them when you buy them is shipping paint. It's crucial to know this. It just keeps it from rusting while they ship it to you, not meant for long term use by any means. Paint it with VHT or have them ceramic coated as you like.

Well clearance is an issue. do the hookers fit better?

Do the Hedmans have their flow rates anywhere or can one of you tell me a little about them?

Re: Hedman hedder setup - right thing to do?

i did not have any fitment problems installing the headers, u just need patience because if u rush u might f up like i did, i had a 88 tbi and on the pass. side i cracked the rusted coolant hose that ran flush on the frame, fixed it no prob lesson learned, but u shouldn't be so worryd with making the right choice, either hooker or hedman is good, there both quality and the little hp diff between them is minimal, i went with hedman because of price/quality, very happy, easy install if ur mechanicly inclined, and i dint have any aftermarket oil pans or anything aftermarket at that, but nice fit nice performamce and defenetly a good choice

Re: Hedman hedder setup - right thing to do?

Yep. They can't ship that easily (fee's, because it's flammable), IIRC. They have that at just about every local parts store.

Read the instructions on the can and follow it as best you can. Prep is key. Bake them in the oven if you can, open all the windows in the house and go to town. It'll stink up the house for a few hours, but now that it's spring it's not so bad. Or use the BBQ, or use a propane torch.

On a fresh motor, don't have a new coating on it. Brand new motors can ruin new coatings. Break in the motor with the normal paint on it, then remove them, scuff sand, clean with laquer thinner, paint. Cure in oven, etc etc. Use 2 cans, get lots of the stuff on there.

Don't touch your headers after though. I had them good and hot (coated with that flat black), and touched it with a rubber faced glove. It melted the glove onto the header and basically stained it. So be careful. They also have a ceramic version of that paint, contains some ceramic, and is silver. I'd do that over the flat black if I could do it again.

buy those headers coated. less underhood heat, and they look better. its worth the extra cash i think anyway.
