Smop pump air tube???

I have a 1987 Trans AM I am trying to get it inspected I live in PA were it is only a visual inspection I am however looking to make it right. I need to figure out were the air tube from the Cat connects. I thought it connected to the air diverter. I can't figure this out I hope someone could help me.

Thanks
Dan

Re: Smop pump air tube???

There are small A.I.R. tubes that come off the exhaust manifolds (one from each exhaust port) that collect together. These should go down to the catalytic converter.

I need to know how they connect to each other or the air diverter. How ever it works.

The "diverter valve" does just that - diverts air flow to one location or the other.

One destination is the small tubes on the exhaust manifolds, typically when cold and open loop; the other to the converter, typically when in closed loop. The manifold tubes and the cat tube are not connected together.

For the line going to the cat, there should be a rubber hose going from the diverter valve, to a check valve screwed onto a stainless steel tube (about 1/2"-5/8" if memory serves) that snakes down to the tube on the cat.

Re: Smop pump air tube???

Yup, the stainless tube is ½" O.D.

That tube should come up to a point above the right exh man; the check valve should be up there; then there should be a rubber hose going over to the appropriate port of the diverter valve.

The div valve should have one inlet (from the pump), and 3 outlets: to the manifolds (active when cold), to the cat (active when hot), and to the atmosphere (active only occasionally during operation). So if everything is hooked up and operating correctly, when you crank the car up cold, the air should come out of a port which should go to a T which then goes to the check valves and tubes to the manifolds; then when it gets fully warmed up, the air should quit going that way, and go to a different port, which should hook to the check valve & tube toward the cat; and the 3rd should just be a vent with a little muffler thing hanging off of it.

Re: Smop pump air tube???

So what connects the AIT setup on the right side to the left side, is there a hose running behind the engine, right on the firewall ?
