Headers in Cali weather
Hello all,
I have a question which everyones gives me the go around on. I live in Cali, weather is no that hot and always is cool. I would like to know, I have an 88 Iroc w/ 305 TPI F motor and would like to add headers, this car is not a daily driver, 1-2 days out of the week I drive it, am I able to use headers, some people don't recommend it and I would like to know why? other than the difficulty of changing plugs. Please help, I want to add headers but also like to have my car reliable as it is now, what other parts need to be changed and whats the best besides hooker headers. Please help.

What set of hookers are you looking at? The 2210's that are on my car invlove the most work. Had to notch the K-member in a few spots using an air powered cut-off wheel or a blow torch, re-routing the passenger side brake line before the hose(just had to pull it some), disconnecting the driver side motor mount and jacking up the engine from the oil pan with a block of wood, and from underneath the car use a 3' 3/8" drive ext to hammer on the #1 primary to get the spark plug boot to clear. Sounds like a lot of work but I needed a set of long tubes to kill off some of the mountainous low end the shorties provided.
From what i've heard the hooker shorties are much easier to install, 2055's IIRC.
Hope that helps.

There are currently no long-tubes legal in CA because it moves the O2 sensor too far. Hooker 2055s are the best for your application and will remain smog legal and everything it bolt-up. I didn't say easy (esp. w/ AC in place), but it will all bolt up to your factory stuff. They will also have zero impact on reliability as long as you tighten the header bolts once in a while.
Good luck

Please read my sticky post at the top of this forum called "What's the best exhaust? What's the best headers?" It will answer a lot of your questions.
