Re: headers cause SES ?

Depends what type of headers you buy and where the O2 sensor is located

The problem with O2s and headers is the factory O2 is a non heated unit. It MUST be at 600some degrees constantly to even register. When a custom exhaust is ran, sometimes the sensor gets moved from its original location (close to the engine) farther down the stream to where the exhaust temps have already cooled some. This means the sensor is not getting hot enough to register correctly

Most shortys have a bung in the collector which is close enough to the engine to no cause a problem

Most long tubes do not have a provision for an O2 sensor at all so a bung must be installed somewhere in the Y or farther down stream. More often than not this is too far down stream for a stock unit

Do a search on "Heated O2 Sensors" and retrofitting them to our cars for just this purpose

That should fix all your O2 sensor woes as far as headers is concerned

Re: headers cause SES ?

Should be

If the light comes on (New headers will kill a sensor) after the headers are broken in, then go with a heated unit. Otherwise you should be good to go

Re: headers cause SES ?

If you gut the cat and run too much of a free flowing exhaust, you can get a SES light. This is due to too little backpressure to make the EGR valve operate properly. I would assume that headers only and a stock exhaust would not cause this.
