My exhaust is Finnished!
Well, me and my father got my new headers in, I took it to a shop, and it took us hours to finally get it all put together. (true duel exhaust is a B*$^#!!!). I had to order Y pipe kit for it and we had to do some major modifying on my old exhaust.
The great feeling of my exhaust lasted when I turned the key and hear my car..
(hahaha)
I was running straight pipes, driving it around town for about a whole week, waiting for my Y pipes to come, and here now we get it all finnished, its SO quiet then it was before..
I kinda figure these headers were gonna do this, so it wasnt much of a surpise I guess, But I notice the total difference of the car got more get up and go power. (my friend, juvy certainly had fun, he was drifting around miller oil twice, my tires are shot anyway)
So I thought I would like to say how I feel about them, I do have one question though, I know its alot quieter, but why is it REALLY quiet? I dont have any cats or mufflers, I found out the glasspacks I have on, were made from montana, butte. any ideas?
Thanks for the ones who read this

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
Yeah, Im just a little disappointed with my exhaust, sadly even my dad is too, he loved the loud glasspack sound
usally dont sound like him..
I tried taking out that restrictive stuff inside the headers, I dont think I did a very good job at it, I know thats why its so quiet.. Im just hoping it may go back to the same sound once I get the headers broke in more. if not, then Im gonna do something different to the exhaust to make it sound like it was before...
It wasnt like loud loud, but it was a pretty noticable sound that people knew the sound of the car, knew instantly it was me. now they dont. haha

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
so what exactly did you do to the car now? What stuff are you talking about thats inside the headers?
open exhaust on even a 305 should still be loud. Headers will make it louder over the stock manifolds

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
hmm, strange.
These headers I got was from Summit racing, thier custom made shorty headers made for camaro's and fire birds, and other vehichles.
these headers were painted black, they were cheepie headers for $110.
those were X-mas present I got for my self this last christmas.. (wasnt a very good christmas for me..)
anyway, when me and my dad took off the stock exhaust manifold, we put the new headers on, I took it to miller oil, a place that does exhaust work, and stuff, and the guy who was working on my car, I knew from highschool before I transfered to a school 30 minutes away from this town.
I had to buy flowtech Y pipe kit for 91-92 camaro's and firebirds, from summit racing also, and these pipes were 2 1/2 inch's wide.
we hooked up this Y pipe on the header, and the Y pipe was for a single exhaust, we turned it to a duel exhaust cause my exhaust was a True duel glass pack exhaust.
My original exhaust pipes were like maybe 1 1/2 in or 2.. I didnt mesure them, but thats what they looked like, (1 1/2 inch) it doesnt have no emission stuff on it, no cats, just two glasspacks and exhaust pipes...
My friend (juvy) told me there was restriction in the headers (I dont really know what that is, what it does, or what it looks like) he told me to take a pipe sander, into the pipes and get it out...
any idea?
cause Im as confused as you are, Orr89RocZ

i think your friend is messing with you or is on crack... there is nothing in the header tubes, just empty space

Well, if its not loud enough, maybe you could remove the glasspacks and replace them with straight pipe?
True Dual straight pipes off the headers should be plenty loud.

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
well the collector on those headers may be small just like my hooker 2055's were. i opened those holes from 1.9 inches to 2.2-2.25 inches. Gained alittle bit more flow i'm sure i just never got a chance to run them again.
What is the size of your pipes now? is it a true dual 2.5 inch setup? You basically went from a 1.5-2 inch true dual with glass packs to a 2.5 inch true dual with no cats/mufflers, just pipe?
it is possible that the flow velocity of the old system was able to create more sound. It would be a restriction for sure but not as bad as you would think for a 305. true dual 2.5 setup is good for most 350-383 motors one would come up with. bigger pipes would allow more flow area for the exhaust but it wont necessarily help you if you dont need that flow.
If you dont need the flow which i dont think a 305 really needs big exhaust, those bigger pipes will slow that flow velocity down and that could help make the exhaust quieter.
I'm planning a 3inch true dual system for my 383, i hope it doesnt quiet it down too much

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
,my mind exact on what you said, I thought well maybe I can go with straight pipe, I dont think it will be too loud, cause I drove around just plain headers for a week, was pretty loud, but Im sure I could get away with it for months, police around here dont care if you do that unless you are Making the car louder (reving, speeding, etc, the usal things people do..)I could be possible like you said Orr89RocZ, that the pipes are wide enough that it quiet it down.
the only pipes that are 2.5 inchs are the headers and the Y pipe, we had to go smaller (we had to make our own reducer) to 2 inchs (sorry, I said 1.5 inch, I went out side and checked, its 2 inchs wide for my exhaust)
my origanal exhaust is 2 inchs, from the Y pipe to the end of the exhaust.

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
My buddie went from singe 2.5" to true dual 3" pipes on his truck, with the stock manifolds and cats. He just cut the y-pipe, expanded the ends, and welded 3" pipes out either side. And put a magnaflow oval body muffler in each pipe, there is no X or Y pipes at all.
His exhaust was pretty loud especially for stock manis and cats.

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
They do sound pretty Nice, awsome job.
My exhaust sound quieter then that, makes me feel down about that.
but I'll solve it this summer. I'm just tired of working on my car in this cold weather, I had to run to napa and car quest alot, on foot, and we had a 30 mph wind, and it rained last night, got cold and I told my self no more projects till summer, I hate the cold weather.

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
I talked to my friend about the exhaust, he told me the reason why its so much quieter is because its not leaking exhaust.
Not sure if that's true or not, But I do have to admit, my car was leaking exhaust before,
the last owner of the car pretty much clamped everything, and during when its cold enough to see the exhaust, I seen leaks alot of places, and my gaskets went bad, because it was making that ticking noises from the engine when it was cold, when it warmed up, it didnt do it anymore.
so my other question is, is he right about that if the car doesnt leak, it'll be quieter then I was used to? (he put my exhaust back together, he weld just about the whole thing expect the flanges off the headers).

Sounds nice man. Do you have pics of the Exhaust. I like the sound of glass packs. i have true dual 2.5 on my 88 iroc. No y pipe though. i need to redo mine and put a y pipe in cause my exhaust scrapes over speed bumps and stuff like little bumps.

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
I had a video of my car, the sound of the exhaust, but just the closest look to the exhaust is the exhaust tips.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIuC6413-3E
I really missed that sound of the car
doesnt sound like nothing like it anymore...
right about now, Im kinda thinking about scrapping my exhaust JUST so I can get the sound of my car again, hahaha.
Mine doesnt scrap strangly, thier up high enough from the ground and still away from the floor board, but now when I drive it, you mostly hear the exhaust pipes screetching and making weird noises (hard to explain) it doesnt bother me, and theres nothing wrong, its just the exhaust isnt really holding by much, and my friend weld part of them together, so they stayed put when he was putting my Y pipe on. but I think who ever else gets into the car goes almost nuts hearing the pipe raddle around like it does.

Exhaust leaks will make it louder sometimes, but it is usually a bad sounding noise. Kinda like a hiss hiss hiss

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
I dunno if you seen this video, but its a Stock LO3 with no mufflers at all, and still has the origional catalytic, y-pipe, and manifolds. It just branches off into 2 pipes after the cat.
Yours without mufflers would sound meaner.

Re: My exhaust is Finnished!
oh wow, it does sound pretty mean, Im really considering straight pipe. Of course that does sound like the origanal cheapie way 16 year olds do with thier cars just to have a mean sounding car.
no offence incase if I did :-(
but the police around here dont mind for the exhaust of cars, as long its not loud, then thier usally fine with it. my most wonder is how my dad will feel about it, but he let me drove my car just plain headers for a whole week, and he didnt even mind it.
