Does Anyone Here Actually Understand NYC Enhanced Inspections & IS MY CAT COOKED?
My Bird is an '83. I thought that it was past the point of the dyno exhaust test. WRONGO!!!!!!!!!! Had to do the dyno thing today, at 25.
For many years, the chrome A.I.R. pipes have been plugged at the head[s].
Never been an issue, as no one has ever looked under the hood.
Even though I now see a reason to reinstall those
chrome pipes, eight darm allen-type plugs are simply not in the mood to come out. I put teflon tape on them, upon installation, so perhaps a bit of rust-buster might do.
Last year, even though I was willing to pay the right people, it actually passed. There was still an air pipe from pump to cat.
At the dyno this afternoon, the machine gave TWO reasons for failure.
One was "Low Volume", meaning a possible clogged exhaust component [what but a cat could clog?????]
The 2nd was elevated NOx and CO. That, in my mind, is from the two-section cat running without the air pump, as I removed it very recently.
Can the cat clog if run w/o an air pump?
And who can really tell me when this dyno big-brother stuff no longer applies to my car.
I know that it was dumb to pull that stuff in a state with California-emission standards, but it is, what it is.
Appreciate everyone's two cents
BTW: I got the sticker, but would prefer to do things in a proper manner next time.
Edit:Checked the book. NOx is taken care of in the front bed.
CO and HC in the rear-WITH HELP FROM THE AIR PUMPED INTO THE CAT.
NOx is done in the front and in the EGR system.
So as I asked, is my converter fried from use w/o an air pump?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thank You
Seth
