Emissions are probably a good thing in the long run. I doubt that cat removal will make your ride significantly louder. A better approach might be a new muffler or catback. A search will provide brand names.

Yes, a catalytic converter is required by federal law to be on all street cars that came with one, that are driven in the United States. That means all thirdgens.

Re: do i need a cat

You could always gut the cat. It will do the same as removing it but is still in place so you cant get in trouble for it. The only thing is that if you do that it probably wont pass emissions. It wouldnt matter if you have historic tags on it but its up to you...

Re: do i need a cat

if you want your car louder take the muffler off and keep the cat when i lived in az idk but there emissions are weird i passed out there on 7 cylinders i got home looked at everything and i had a spark plug wire cut but you do need a cat to pass but like i said you want it louder take the muffler off and run dual pipes out the back

Re: do i need a cat

Even for those states not requiring emissions testing, the cat still has to be on there by FEDERAL law.

Re: do i need a cat

Removing the cat will not make the car loader but will give it the cackle sound. Removing the cat will however make the car smell fumey and you will have the exhuast stick on you from time to time. Trust me not good, that's why I put a cat back on both my camaro's, to much fumes

Re: do i need a cat

yea, the car will stink without the cat. I have run my car without cats for the last 5 years or so and im tired of the smell. Im in the process of putting cats back on. You only loose a little power, and im hoping it will quite the car a little more.

Gutting the cat is the same as removing it in the eyes of the law. Yes you will get in trouble for it, if you're caught.
