SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

I'd love to se some pics of side exit exhaust systems, as I'm contemplating dumping mine in front of the rear wheel. Also, any input on noise/ power would be appreciated.

Post 'em up!

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

i dumped mine in front of the wheels. i wouldn't recommend it unless u have airshocks in the rear so u can raise ur rear up. when i do it i have like 3 inch clearance maybe. i will post pictures when i put it back together again since i pulled the tranny out. also i didn't do hangers since i would of had to drill in the floor pan and i am not about to do that. but i used galvanized fencing wire about 16 ga i think or 14. and it holds it up well. Just not a clean installation but thats what i did. I put 2 turbo mufflers aftermarket with a hearthrob aftermarket duel exhaust. came to about 250 bucks.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Does no one else have any pics? I'm looking for the simplest, lightest eight exhaust system possible to handle around 400 hp. I was thinking of going with a single 3" pipe from the Y-pipe, through a chambered mufler, out the side. Possibly oval tubing for clearance. Anything like this out there?

How many pounds would this save off a full exhaust setup exiting out the rear? I'm thinking around 50 lbs...

tell us more about the exhaust thats on your car headers/manifold,y-pipe/ h-pipe/x-pipe,where its exiting?i personally would run true duals depending on combo 2.5" tubing to something besides chamber mufflers.also do you want it legal or illegal?

You're thinking way high. Exhaust pipe is thin wall aluminized steel. And by dumping in front of the rear wheels, you're saving at most four feet of pipe and the larger muffler.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Right now I have astock exhaust. I'm trying to think ahead so I can know exactly what to buy/do. I know I'm going to install a 350/t5, looking for around 400 hp, nothing too extreme. I just want something efficient, and I want to save as much weight as possible. I'm interested in doing auto-x, and handling is a top priority. Right now I'm leaning toward the hooker 2055's with a 3" y pipe...

Vs. a true dual, I think I would be saving closer to 8 or 10 ft. of piping plus the heavier muffler. Stll seems like 25 - 30 lbs, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the input!

for now i would run the 2055's and the y-pipe to a 3" esingle exhaust.not to sound like a ***** but the t-5 will break behind a stock 350 powershifting it for a while.id go with something stronger.but then again i might be

That's exactly what I want to do. I just wanted to see some pics of that system exiting out the side. I've heard different things about the t-5. I guess if I break one, it will be a good excuse to move up to a tko500

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

I am also looking into getting rid of my exhaust and hand just having a 3" pipe with glass packs come out in front of the back wheels. Will they melt the Side skirts? Also would they even fit under there. I just bought a 400+ horse power 355 and I need to let that thing exhale.

Message me with picture if you got them

Here's a picture I found of a member's car. GTAfanatic says he has about 3" of clearance, and has never had a problem. I'm going to message him and see if he's got any pics from underneath the car.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

I will get pictures uploaded as soon as i get my exhaust back on since i just put my new transmission in. But mine is side exit and i have about 3inches and i have no problems either. mine is a temp job. galv steel wire is holding the exhaust. turbo mufflers out of jegs, got the hearthrob duel exhaust universal. works great.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Andris Skulte was running some NASCAR boom tubes at one point. http://www.skulte.com/gallery/view_a...R-Side-Exhaust

I know you can get those style of boom tubes from dr. gas

Also look for pictures of CarNDrvr's camaro. If I remember correctly, it also had side exhaust.

Those boom tubes are cool, although dr. gas looks a little pricey. It definitely helps me see my idea better though.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

While boom tubes are slick shlt, they're not road legal. I mean their some of the LOUDEST things out there, hence their true application...NASCAR. Andres does run them but his car was also turned into an off-road car. He and I both live in CT and here, the "sound police" are ******. Theres no way one of them would let a car with boom tubes on it fly. I got pulled over for my cars exhaust and I was running hooker 2210's, and 4inch mufflex catback with the flowmaster muffler.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

I don't have sfc's yet, but I definitely plan on installing them. That was a concern as well. I also plan on lowering the car about 2". I'm trying to determine If I can run sfc's on a lowered car with a side exit exhaust, using oval tubing. If not, I will have to go with a standard over the axle exhaust. I have a feeling ground clearance is going to be a big issue...

I was at a ford swap meet a few years back, and they had the NASCAR (the real ones, with the square tubes and stuff) exhaust. It was like a side pipe, but only on one side.. That's what I'd do..

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

I may end up doing boom tubes on my newly bought 87. I won't use the nascar stuff though, they are not stainless and I can't stand rust.
I'll probbly tig up my own set, this is what I'm building right now for a 70 Coronet Wagon (I made them pretty wide since the car is huge and I want the tubes to stand out, one will go on each side)

First is a crude design drawing

All they need now is some flat sheets welded in the middle, the internal ribs added and welding them under the car. The rest of the exhaust is 3" stainless pretty massive. Since my Iroc is still being shipped I don't have it and don't have a clear idea how I can make the exhaust run. I'm thinking duals would be nice.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

there is somone on this board with a grey primered (iirc) camaro with longtube headers with a 3 bolt flange that he bolted glasspacks to which ran down the length of the door (not on the outside, they were tucked up in the chassis) then ran an angled tube out before teh rear wheels.
this was a true dual setup and i believe there was no crossover.

i cant find the thread, but it looked sick. hopefully he is reading and will post pics

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

That's roughly what I have on my truck. The pipes are tucked up with 3" dynomax race bullets and then an expander to a 4" side exhaust

If you find the thread, please post. I'm still undecided on what to do with the exhaust on my iroc. I just got it last week but one thing is for sure, I will fab a stainless true dual exhaust for it (like i do on all my cars and my buddies)

I've always wanted to run my exhaust out through a hole in my iroc side skirt, but it would be too much custom work for me. It would look pretty cool though.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Yes, they are pretty heavy, however they aren't much heaver than a full length exhaust to the rear would be, maybe even lighter, eliminating quite a bit of pipe and the 2 kickups over the rear axle counts for a lot of weight. They need to be big, otherwise they would not stand out on this car:

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Didn't perceive it as knocking my work, thought I'd explain why they are this big. I was shocked at how big they turned out also. They were much smaller at first, you can see I added a section in the angled side that comes off the 45 degree bend. The narrower first try just looked tiny under the car.

Here you can see where I welded a piece in between, I also cut a good deal off the one with the angled open end, the other one still needs to be cut.

It indeed does look tiny compared to them....Man you must go thru alot of tig wire lol...I myself out of all the welding that I do I absolutely LOVE Stainless Tig with aluminum a close second.... Keep up the good work and keep us up to date with your progress...

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

I dont think it's a good setup for a low car. Sound-wise - if your engine is putting out power that goes hand-in-hand with a scream (or a roar), then side exit is kinda cool.

On my 396 Chevelle, I had side exit with some megaphones. That car roared when I got down on it and it sounded great. I didn't mind the exhaust smell, either. The can ran damn near 100% efficiency and the premium exhaust just smelled sweet.

God i miss that car

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Both "finished" before chipping and getting the angles in there.

Still have to final cut the end, the cut will also make the exit perpendicular to the ground.

Cut and partially rewelded.

The thicker "sleeve" part is an expansion joint. The slip joint part is fabricated in such a way that the front exhaust pipe slips into it but there's also a pipe inisde. The exhaust pipem slides in between giving it a tight seal without having to slide the pipe in all the way.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Those should look really good on that car. Do those boom tubes give the exhaust a "megaphone effect"? I'd like to hear a sound clip when you're done!

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

There are no mufflers on it now, I'll probably do a run without mufflers first, just to hear how loud it really is I'll make a small vid.

More vids,

and outside: (running a little rough still, and low on trans fluid)

I'll get a full throttle one tomorrow. Have to work out some final little details. I have one side of the exhaust finished and cut to fit the body line, other side will be finished tomorrow. I already had neighbors complaining about the noise LOL

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

Are those bolted to the floor? Do you have solid motor mounts?

What do those who have side exits use for hangers? There isn't a lot of room there.

Re: SIDE EXIT EXHAUST - any pics?

on my tucked "sidepipes" the hanger is welded right to the rear frame. and they are run right next to the skirts with no melt issues or anything. load as all hell though. gotta have a good sterio if u are gonna run sides.

I just posted pics in the post about duel exhuasts

Here's mine...

close-up before paint.

I'm looking at redoing mine, it is bolted to a tab welded to the body, I have one of those flex joints right before the bullet muffler.

Who do you mean? Me? Those are botled to the subframe connectors but the brackets are sandwiched between rubber donuts. No solid motor mounts, theres more than enough flex in the system.

GMan, that's looking good. Looks like one can tuck quite a nice oval section under there.
