Welding stainless steel tips
I have very little knowledge about welding. However, my son has taken it in school and is pretty good at MIG and ARC welding.
What I'm looking to do is swap out my current exhaust tips with the magnaflow tips below. I took my car to a good ol boy shop here in GA and they told me "since they were stainless, they need to be TIG welded". Is this true? Being in the military I have a "craft shop" available to me fully equiped with industrial MIG and Arc welders.
Thanks in advanced for your advice.

Re: Welding stainless steel tips
to be done correctly, they need to be tig welded with the proper wire for a stainless to mild steel connection, however, you can weld them together with a mig and regular wire and gas, the connection will probably outlast the exhaust.
the issue with the dissimilar metals is that they will eventually begin to corrode, which would be an issue in a structural application, but this is an exhaust tip. I did some welding on my y-pipe, stainless pipe and regular wire and its been that way for a couple years with no issues at all, and have dont some other stainless to steel welding the same way on exhaust with no issues.
It can be done both ways, its up to you how you do it.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I will post some pics of the finished product later (since I'm working in DC until Feb).
