like the title states do people at your car just because its a little loud??? like neighbors, and slow people mainly.. its just people always get at me in the camaro, but in the honda (its quiet) people never get , unless i fry the tires...and trust me, im pretty easy on the maro, i give the honda heck, only thing that makes it kinda loud is a intake on it but still people never get mad at it, and its fast as heck too with that vtec v6, so its not a speed issue its a loud issue

anyway anyone else notice this, got any storys and how you deal with it?? im get pretty X1000 is someone comes up to me and starts runn off and i know its not just me beacuse people get mad at any of my friends that have loud car

hope the mods see this as usefull and dont lock it, id really like to know how others deal with it

 

i just rev it so i cant hear them, or tell um to **** OFF, they cant do anything about it

ya i go through the same thing, my neighbors are kind of cool with it, i try to be quiet cuz theres two babys next to me, but i mostly catch slack from my parents (im only 20 and cant afford to move yet), i mean i dont have an auctual muffler, just two cherry bombs that dump, i really try to take it easy but they still bitch, so what i do now i put the car in first (auto) and just pull away and drive with it in first till it hits 5000 and then shift, it gets them extra mad and im satisfied, and ya even when i take it easy im 'HAULIN BUTT' to them, and i have a k-5 blazer lifted 8in on 36s with flowmasters on it and its pretty loud but they dont complain about that things noise, drives me nuts

 

I get angry when people yell at me to slow down when I'm already going slow. Just because a car is loud doesn't mean you are going fast.

 

Some people around school give me dirty looks when i drive by and the exhaust is screaming, one time i was at the tampa airport waiting to pick up a friend just ideling along parked near the terminal and the guy behind me actually got out and asked me to turn my car off cause he couldnt breath my exhaust was to strong for him or something, i actually got a laugh out of that. But up home in NH the neighbors bitch up a storm about my car being to loud or something. One time a guy came down out street at night and did burnouts at night and they blamed me. They even had the nerve to walk up to the garage and say they would call the cops next time i did that. I promptly showed them my car sitting next to me on jackstands with no rear end and told them to shove it. My car had not moved in a month. lol

I am among this crowd also. My car has Edelbrock headers and flowmaster exhaust with aftermarket aluminized steel Y pipes.


I was out yesterday rebuilding the cluster and one of my neighbors came out and politely asked me to please stop making so much racket at night because he has a newborn, which I can respect.

I do start it up and go flying away alot at night, but I hope he wasn't hearing me trying to be quiet one night and think I was intentionally making a racket, because I will be sneaky from now since he was so respectful about it but I DO have places to go late at night sometimes and no matter how quiet I try to be the first few seconds when I start the engine is the loudest.




My three favorite moments though. The first one was shortly after I got the car back from dropping a new engine in it and pulled into the drivethru at burgerking. I stuck my head out the window and start telling the guy my order, and he just goes silent. I say, "Did you get all that?". "...I Can't hear you over the engine sir". I had to get out of the car, walk across the mulch up to the orderboard and talk directly into the microphone.

Second moment. I was at a bank drivethru again right after I got the car back and the BRAND NEW DURACRAP GOLD STARTER decided to take a crap there. The guy couldn't hear me so I shut the engine off, took care of my business and when I tried to start it back up, CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK. And I was plugging up the drivethru for the next 15 minutes. After everything cooled off and I tried it for the 4th time, it finally started right up.

Final moment, It's 2AM and me and two buddies are out in BFE in some neighborhood where buddy #1 knows a friend who was out of town, and decided it to be a bright idea to use the keys he gave him to feed his dog while he was away to sneak into his house and watch TV, drink beers and use the firepit in their backyard (When It's about 15F outside ). When we were all about to leave, he says. "Be very quiet going out of here I don't want the motormouth neighbors saying anything about what we did tonight". I back up into a vacant space next to a car waiting for buddies #1 and #2 to lead the way, when at that moment for some odd reason my throttlebody decided to stick putting the car into ghetto cruise control at about 1500RPM. I blipped the throttle to get it unstuck taking the engine to about 2500RPM, which sets off the alarm on the car next to me resulting in about 5 houses lighting up.

 

Yes and I got a V6 3.1 . I got the turbo hood and you'd be surprised how much sound comes out of those vents. All ways have people telling me to slow down in neighborhood but I'll be going the speed limit just my car doesn't sound it. Really bad on neighborhood that have hills as you enter cause it sounds like I'm gunning it.
My neighborhood is cool with it they have seen me build my car into what it is now and say it bring back memories of there younger days .
I use to get in trouble when I was in high school before I got the hood with the parking guy with the sound but there would always be a Honda near by that had those fart cannons.
As I'm in college now it's not a big deal as were I go has a big automotive program so everyone has a loud car.

 

it has a lot to do with whether the car is just obnoxiously loud, or a good sounding loud. Also when and where your running the car.

My car is loud, i know its loud, and i know that i have neighbors that who dont appreciate loud things really early in the morning and really late an night, so i try to accommodate them.

This also has a lot to do with what the car looks like. Several years ago, when i was still putting the car together, i had it out and running in a coat or grey primer, red ground fx a black hood and dirty stock rims. It looked a bit rough, and i was hassled a couple times by law enforcement and the state inspection tech about the sound. After the car was finished and painted with nice wheels, people just compliment the car, not a word about noise.

What ticks me off though, is motorcycles. Some of these guys have no care at all for other people. Running straight pipes, louder than hell, most of the time on bikes that are running like ****, and they just have to go out for a nice early morning cruise through town constantly revving the damn things. I have no respect for them.

 

I stop and ask them if they want a ride.

 

Haha the only time I got chewed out for my car was by some *** munch who jumped out infront of my car and started screaming at me in spanish, now when i drive by i let it rev to 5k before i shift to 2nd

guy next to me is restoring a 71 cuda, and just got back from the machine shop a nicely put together 383 4 speed
he claims it to be able to pull 500 plus HP

The only looks i get though are good, i even get thumbs up sometimes with my dixie horn!

i think the all time best making someone mad, me and 3 friends (each in out 3rd) were going to friend 1's house, and we made a turn in this subdivision (all loud cars) this old man raking his yard threw his rake down and started waving his fist in the air, and said "G**D*** CAMAROS !!!!!!!!!!"

or the.........old man pull out right infront of me i lay on the air horns (got dump truck air horns not the cheap crapy parts store ones) so he slams on breaks and stops..........so i just keep letting the horns rip, he opens his door gets out and , so i say ef it and go around him, get to a light and he tries to pull me out the car to "kick my a**" i told him i aint going to jail over his goffy self go again and then i get pulled over for wreckless endangerment.....for what you may ask, for going around a guy who illegaly pulled out and stoped in the travel portion of the high way to kick my butt......IM THE VICTEM!!!!!!!!!!! BAH!!!!!!!!!!, if i wasnt 19 at the time i prob would of got out the car at the stop light, the older i get the less calm i stay about situations

i think what we can get out of all of this is respect the people who respect us, and well i dont know what to say about the jerks maybe someone will have some insight that may work

I second the motorcycles. I live on a major highway that harleys go by at 1 a.m. in the morning, in a pack of (im not kidding here) 50+ bikes, all going out to Sturgis. Its so loud with their "stock" pipes, the windows rattle.

Nice cars can be a good sounding loud, but the trashed cars that sound obnoxious should be impounded.

 

I usually get a good response about my car, I've had people walk up to me and say 'that sounds like a pretty nasty little motor'. I just smirk and say 'I bet you can't guess what it is'. Just a v6.

I had a guy with a pretty serious 2nd gen (that probably shouldn't have been on the street) line up next to me at a red light and powerbrake it like we were going to race. He tore the f*** away and I just putzed along.

Whenever someone does get rude about my car I don't hold back. A while ago some guy told me my car was too loud and I needed to fix it- so I pulled infront of his house and did a nice steady 10 sec burnout, let off the brake and burned it down the block for him.

 

wright now my car is a respectible loud, it has a great sound to it but i did go a week with open headers...sounded like i was always at the track...lmao stand outside it and rev it up pretty nice and yeah i can see why someone would get pissed....haha i would drive by people and then i see them roll there window up as if it would help...surprisingly i would drive next to cops and they don't care.....and red lights i have other people telling me to roast them.
was fun but i got sick of it pretty fast......nobody would bother me though, yeah i got afew mean faces and afew fingers but a lot more people praising me.

 

You guys should have been there when my buddy brought his derby car down to my house. I was finishing up the wiring panel for em. well after we got it done we decided to start it up and take it around my backyard for a test run. well a cammed 350 with headers open throug the hood is a tad bit loud my neighbors were pissed but they got over it.. i'll let ya know how the maro sounds once she's done

 

One night long ago in high school I was helping a buddy do a engine swap in his 74 NOVA. We finished all but the mufflers. We took it around his neighborhood wide open with open headers. once we got back to his house we pulled the car onto ramps and started bolting on the exhaust when the police showed up. My buddy got out from under the car with a new cherry bomb in his hand and walked over to the police car. The policeman stated they had got complaints on a car with loud mufflers. My buddy said it can't be us we don't have any. The policeman laughed and told him no more test and tune for tonight and drove off.

 

LOL! This is why if you get into my car to drive you will notice there is a tire iron laying next to the seat. Some might be puzzled by this, but I put it there after one night where 3 guys and some trailer trash broad were making sexual gestures at my woman, so I proceded to make an obscene gesture back at them and they all wanted to fight. I decided it was wisest at the time to aim my car at their jeep with them all in it, stomp the gas and right as I was about to T-Bone them swerve out of the way at the last second. I could of sworn I saw one of the guys in the backseat dive to the other end of the jeep and drop his 40.


One of the better times though with my loud exhaust was the night I got into a pissing contest with a cop. That's right you read that right a cop. I'm not sure if anyone else has these cars in their area but every now and then down here I see crown vics that say "Interstate Patrol" and these things sound jacked up beyond belief. You'd thinlk they came fresh off a drag strip. So one night I come out of 7-11 and there is the same cop I saw there before who LOVES to make a racket with his exhaust. So I hold the pedal down about 1/3 of the way while cranking so it will start loud. He revs back at me and then I do it even louder back at him. He then backs out, revs it once more and does a small burnout on the way out of the parking lot. Put a smile on my face for the night.

 

I was driving through my neighborhood around a bend in 2nd gear going about 25 and a guy driving by started yelling. I yelled back so he stopped and got out, so I did the same. He was around 60 and I'm 18 and we started arguing in the middle of the street and he told me he was going to "run my plates." He's not going to find anything on a teenager with absolutely nothing on his record. It's just because I have headers, and a Flowmaster catback on a 305.

Another time right when I had finished putting my exhaust all together, I was driving around at about 10 at night. My car wouldn't idle, so I held it at about 2k and the only other car around was my girlfriend next to me and we didn't do anything insane coming from the stoplight, but I got pulled over for "exhibition of performance" which apparently falls under the drag racing laws here. It's ridiculous.

All my neighbors are generally ok with it, but I try to baby it until I'm out of site. I actually feel really bad when I have to leave for work at 5:30am or when I come home from work at midnight or 1. I can't help it since it's my DD.

 

mine is drag strip loud, my nieghbors hate me when i drive my car or do anything were it requires the engine being run. doesnt matter if its 3pm or not, i even put collector exts and some glasspacks on it! i hardly ever get to tune it, cause the cops show up every time!
i say they can shove it up there azs, ive been bitched at for going 25 in a merc topaz with an exhaust leak, some people just dont like noise.

 

hell i need to put headers on my car.. still but right now i have open exhaust mani's after a little incident that happen with my car. All my neighbors around me are old people... some of them are restoring old cars back from the 60's so i guess its not bad.. but in my town there so many sport cars and muscle cars nobody really gets mad. Until a out of town person comes in for a stroll :P

Before when this would happen when I was in my teens, I would usually just rev at them. One time I stopped and laid a heater. But that is just immature and going to cause more problems. Now I will stop, put it in reverse, and ask them what their problems is. Then I proceed to tell them I was doing the speed limit or less. If they still don't believe me, I tell them they are not the law and to mind their own business.


My dad had the same problem when he had his car. One neighbor always use to yell at him just because it was loud. Well one day he threw a garbage can in front of my dads car when he was passing by and he hit it. My father then got out of the car, and punched him right in the face. But that was the good ole days in the 70's where people weren't sue happy.

 

Lotta younger people believe it too... just look at the Type-R kiddies.

I drove mine around a bit with open headers, one night as I was leaving my friend's place I was trying to be considerate, idling down the street in third... totally set off two or three car alarms as I passed by. I was gone before anyone came out to complain.

 

I like a good deep rumble and some volume when I get on the throttle, but there's really no reason to be driving on the street with open headers or even the lack of a muffler.

I tend to see more trucks that are loud though... the noise usually only annoys me when I know it's a slow car/truck and they're just being loud for the sake of being loud. I only had one old person on their lawn signaling me to slow down... i was kinda in disbelief and didn't figure out what happened until I was passed them. I was only going 30 at most and my car really isn't all that loud!

 

They probably do were I live. I live in an apartment and they put the heaters for most of the apartments in little closets in the garages to save room in the apartments. Mine is in our apartment but the two bedroom apartments are all in the garage. Anyways I was working on my car one day and I guess the exhaust got into the system and they complained about a smell and they had people coming and checking it out for two days till I got a call from a friend at the office asking if I had my car in there and I was like ya I was working on it because it wasn't starting so he told me I should try and not start it in there lol. Plus I was parked backwards with the exhaust right next the heaters but It's not my fault they put them in a garage.

One day while out and about I could see a mother and her kid walking, facing away from me, along the curb. They stop and look both ways before crossing and as I'm passing them she screams at me to "SLOW DOWN!!!". I look at my speedo, I'm going 40(km/hr) in a 50 zone. I just smiled to myself and carried on.

But you really do have to be nicer if you have a louder exhaust, it's our hobby and making loud noises in spite doesn't help our hobby and you'll see more and more people making their own noise to get bylaws passed to have our hobby even more difficult to do things now or in the future.

I cringe when I leave in the morning on the odd occaision that I take it to work, as I leave at 6am. I know someone is hearing it, and I try to take it as easy as I can as I'm leaving. Thankfully it's not that loud once i get past the initial start up, but I still cringe hoping I'm not disturbing anyone so I can have some fun on an otherwise dreary commute.

 

haha i get the hand signals to slow down with the dirty look usually. so what i do is i Floor it when im right next to them and give them the finger. my cars pretty loud with headman LTs, true dual 3" with 3" xpipe and 3" turndowns cops like to pull me over tho lol

i kno my cars loud so i dont gun it or just drive it to be loud all the time. i usually respect ppl as in i dont drive in 3K all the time but at the odd chance someone says sumthing when i'm just cruizing... they get what they deserve. i dont want to be loud just to be loud like RICERS but i like the classic muscle car sound that a V8 makes.

 

i dont know, my old neighbor hated me to but at the time i was driving trucks and starting up an international at 3am, and backing it back in the drive way at 9pm

some people no matter what will get mad, i think the best idea is just to ask them what the problem is and so forth so on

 

Never once had a problem, never once had a cop pull me over for loud exhaust and no one has yelled at me for any reason. Dual 3 inch with bullets dumping before the axle is quite loud (too damn loud) and still haven't had a problem with anyone.

when last on the road the 82 z28 was loud , but did not get the attention the 73 SS camaro with 496/richmond 5spd and hooker 4 into 1 x 4in side pipes sans baffels got! I would go out and start the car and let it warm up (even when it was 90) for five to ten min. befor i would go anywhere; just to **** off the whole block!!

 

Mine's loud enough that I am above the legal sound ordinance of 93 db by quite a bit. You can hear my car several blocks away. And then I stand on it. Sb2 through boom tubes rock.

 

It's a good thing you don't live in Milwuakee. During Harley's 100th and 105th anniversary it gets kinda loud where I live. I don't mind it though.

When my camaro wasn't running I had my dads 2004 Dodge 3500 Long Bed Cummins Diesel. I was going to go pick up a friend from court and there was a judge out side with a cop and what looked to be a 16-17 year old girl with her dad. I overheard them talking while the car next to me idled and the cop explained how the exhaust was too loud. My camaro's exhaust was 10x louder than that (Stock manifold & Y pipe, American Thunder 3" Cat-Back). So I thought I would be nice and talked to the judge about how that wasn't even close to loud but he kind of blew me off. So I went over to my dads truck and told the judge to listen. I started the truck and it is louder than my camaro. Walked over to the judge and he could barely here me talk so I went back to turn it off came back to the judge and said that that was stock, and it is. He then let the girl off! Didn't get her number though, she was kinda cute. Well thats my story.

 

a cummins sound so good with a 5" or bigger stright pipe LOL

i dont like quit diesels and V8's.....anything else can be quiet....unless i could get my "burn out van" to sound like my couz's v6 rustang.....that thing sounded real good for a v6

in my past experience if your making real power say 500+ its loud in front , inside, at idle or WOT. if you have to stand on it to be heard ,you aint making any power. imo

 

Strange we run alot of engines on the dyno that are over 500+ horse power and they are quite ran though muffflers. If your car has to sound like a log truck to be fast I bet your car is realy fast.

 

only in 'Bama would anyone ever think of putting a log truck on a dyno.......just goofing on ya. and yes my car is loud and SERIOUSLY fast; but dont sound like no log truck i've ever heard.ya'll must really haul lumber in 'Bama

ive got and 88 formula with a 350 swap shorty headers and just new parts.. no exhuast yet due to railroad bein slow so im not makin money, but my stories..

wrenchin on the bird the other nite gettin ready to fire it up with the new engine, i hear the nieghbor come outside with his buddy to smoke a cig, and they start on about "itll never run its a junker, better tow it away""" yada yada. well shortly after, the sweet sound of , **** YOU.
its stupid loud open headers but ive worked on race cars for several years and just get spinnin wen i hear that beautiful sound.

these guys are new to the area and didnt know how cool the old people here are. since we've moved here several years ago the nieghbors have grown to it and actually started makin some noice too. our "KING" or so he thinks he is has moved becuase of me. loud bikes, go karts, trucks, you name. the older people around here have started playin with thier toys again, i told the guy across the street if its to loud your too old, and that seems to have spread.. they love the noise, almost like there youth being restored and they've realized its not hurtin any one so they make noise too. any enough jabberin.

but seriously; we have all been unjustly persecuted due to the elevated dba's comming form our cars. currently the Z28 spread over two shops. but the d-max still makes more noise than is polite. thats why i drive two blocks west to avoid the new born 5 houses to the east on the corner. i leave for work at 5:00am, and did not have to be asked . loud & rude was cool at 18, or i thought so any way. now 20 years later i still think loud is cool i just try use my brain now.... stepping off the soap box
