Opinions?

Hey guys, so heres the situation its a 87 gta that me and my dad pretty much jsut restored but the exhaust isnt exactly wat i wanted its all stock at the moment but ive been looking into the classic chamberd muffler because its not a cross-flow muffler and it kinda sounds like the old muscle cars and magnaflow becuase from wat ive heard its more of a stock sound and my dads friends keep teling me that the stock sound is the best sound (which i dont agree with) and i cud just buy a muffler and instal it...so wat do u guys think? keep it stock, magnaflow so its sorta quite or chamberd muffler for the old car sound?

Oh one last question i forgot to ask.. would it be worth it to buy just the hooker 2055s with a highflow cat to change the sound? or will the stock muffler still sound the same?

Re: Opinions?

Personally, I like the stock sound, but everyone has a different idea of what they like. If you install headers, and a highflow cat, but keep the stock muffler, the difference in sound will not be noticable. I have run a few GM trucks with the cat or dual cats, and no muffler. That does not sound bad, and is actually just a little louder then stock, but not real loud. It's hard to get a vehicle with a cat to have that old muscle car sound, because the cat blends all of the sounds into a kind of drone sound, instead of a rumble.

Re: Opinions?

Thanks, that the stock sound is't that quite at idle and sounds nice but isn't that loud when i get on it or in my opinion it isn't it sounds nice though, how much would the stock muffler actualy hurt the performance when and if i installed headers and a y pipe or should i just keep it all stock?

Re: Opinions?

The headers will increase the exhaust flow, and thus help with performance. A high flow cat will also allow the exhaust to flow better with less restriction. A cross over pipe will balance the system, and relieve some of the back pressure, and creates a draft effect on the system, making it operate more efficiently. The stock muffler is only going to flow the amount of exhaust it is designed for, and my guess is that it will act somewhat like a choke on the otherwise high flow exhaust, and will restrict the flow somewhat. It is possible that the muffler is the least restrictive component of your stock exhaust system, and you may see an inprovement in performance, however the design of the stock system is to provide equal flow capabilities to the rest of your stock system. These cars breath pretty well with thier OEM systems intact, especially in low RPM running, and you will probably only experience an issue with the exhaust in high RPM running, such as racing applications.
