Muffler question!

Hello! I'm a bit of a noobie to the camaro right now...but I'm slowly learning!

Well I bought an 87 iroc-z with a 350TPI and it has ceramic headers, 3" downpipe to a flowmaster 40 series exhaust. Now, I don't like the sound of my car as of right now. Its way to deep for me I'm looking for a louder but not too loud muffler! So my question is, can I just take out the MUFFLER only, and replace it with a borla or magnaflow muffler? If so, where can I buy JUST the muffler? Every thing comes with downpipes and are like 600+.

Also, is this the stock cat?

Re: Muffler question!

Yes you can just buy the muffler and you don't have to replace any of the exhaust tubing. Now from your picture (if thats your car) it looks like you can just unbolt the tailpipes(things with the polished tip on the end). But it also looks like you have to cut the muffler where the exhaust coming from the front of the car meets the muffler. If what i just explained is the case, then you will most likely need to get the new muffler (easier to get the same size as the flowmaster) and either get someone who can weld, weld it on or if you can weld then you can do it and then clamp your tailpipes back on. But make sure your inlet and outlet tubing is the correct size before buying your muffler! To find a place to buy a muffler, look in JEGS or Summit racing. They have a bunch of mufflers to choose from. Hope this helps! good luck.

Re: Muffler question!

Just replace muffler....don't need all new pipes....as far as muffler recommendations.....I like hooker muffers....aero chamber and max flow...The reason why is flow numbers....flowmaster and glasspacks are on the bottom of the list as far as flow numbers and performance.....the hooker maxflow is on the top of the list with little to no restriction...I run an aerochamber....remember it's not just the air flowing through them...they also the little fact of sound reverberations bouncing back up to the motor which has a lot to do with the power (no a engineer so don't know why that matters in detail) but anyway I use the aerochamber and love the way it sounds....and it's a ton louder than my old flowmaster I had before....just my opions here...good luck..
