If you go this way, try and use some sort of crossover. It will help immensely with scavenging and sound.
Edit: Misunderstood, if you split a single pipe into two mufflers, it probably won't do anything at all.

if you're wanting 3.5" exhaust...click on this link here and scoll down until you find my pics....there isn't much room at all after running 3.5 pipe....but it might give ya some insight seeing one installed....I think pics are 3/4 way down first page...I don't think you could run two mufflers w/3.5 pipe and fit it under car....

I don't know CA laws, I know they are strict....but you will for sure have to put cats on it (mine doesn't have them, no emmisions where i'm at), but where the pipe is double it's 2 1/2" (into a 3 1/2").....you could put in two 2 1/2" cats right there (where factory cats go, and two will fit, some cars came with 2 from factory)...I Don't know what else your emmision laws require, but I wouldn't think that bigger pipe would be illegal, as long as you have cats, and smog system.

If you redo exhaust...get mandrel bent pipe, and a couple high flow cats......I don't know if you read that thread but I did that in a driveway...saved lots of $$$,
