Head to Header Matching

Morning everyone - So I recently decided to bring in my edelbrock 60899 64cc cylinder heads to have a valve job and be flow tested/matched with my intake and exhaust...I have the tubular exhaust setup from Edelbrock...i know some of you aren't fans but please listen any how! As they are matching the cylinder heads to the headers the shop is stating the port on the header itself does not remotely match to the ports on the heads. This guy is a family friend so I know hes not trying to work me out of extra cash.

I have tried looking around to see if there would be any difference from the headers point view from cast to the new aluminum heads I have but have come up empty. Anyone know why these would be so grossly mismatched? I don't want to buy a new set of headers if avoidable...can I simply grind out the port on the header to a closer fit?

Thanks for the advice

"As they are matching the cylinder heads to the headers"

I would not do that. Things can be made a lot worse very easily. I would just open up the header port so that nothing blocks the exhaust port on the head. That is common practice.

Re: Head to Header Matching

Right... reverse that. Should I grind out the headers* themselves more to match the heads...not planning on closing up the ports on the cylinder heads.

Except doing that will probably grind away the weld that holds the header tube to the header flange.

It's best to weld around the tube on the outside of the flange first. Then you will have material holding the tube onto the flange. You might actually grind away the gasket sealing surface, though, so be prepared to weld a bead around the finished flange port and have it ground flat again to seal against the gasket & head.
