exhaust along the sides?

so ive been thinking about getting dual exhaust lately, only problem being i live in california so im kind of limited to my choices. I cant do true dual they say because then i'd need 2 cat's right? But i thought corvettes had 2 cats? am i wrong? if they do, why would i not be allowed to? but onto my real question, if i were to get dual exhaust, would thinking about having it run down both sides of the vehicle and exiting out the sides be a bad idea? any loss or gain compaired to regular dual exhaust exiting from the back? and would it even be possible with only one cat and still get any power gain? because with only 1 cat id probably have to sacrifice to make the angles it would take to put them out the sides? what do you guys think
