CA SMOG Legal Headers 1983 Trans Am

Hey guys,

I have a 1983 Pontiac Firebird TransAm with a 5.0L 305ci 4bbl carb. I am restoring the car.

Right now it has an exhaust leak on one of the manifolds. I am trying to find some CA SMOG legal headers to replace the manifolds. I did some Googling and mostly found info for Mustangs here in CA, but hardly any info on the TransAm.

You guys know any good places to find CA SMOG legal headers for a TA? Or have any particular headers you would recommend?

Thanks

Edelbrock makes some, but I wouldnt recommend them.

Hooker and Hedman do too.

Re: CA SMOG Legal Headers 1983 Trans Am

well...i know camaros and firebirds aren't exactly the same...but i have an 83 z28, pretty similar i would think...maybe I'm wrong though. I was gonna get dual exhaust done from some shop, and i thought about headers too, but they said they couldn't find any smog legal ones in california. and they wouldnt do any that weren't smog legal for insurance purposes. BUT, i went to summitracing.com and talked to one of the live support chats, i asked them if they had any smog legal headers in CA, and he found 2 for me.....i never actually tried them, but i asked and he said they come with paperwork and everything, and the shop told me that if i can find legal headers with paperwork they will put them in....so yeah, try summit racing, go to the live support, and ask them, make sure you tell them they need to be legal. good luck.

I have the Edelbrock TES Headers, they come with a CARB decal... I would suggest you get them powder coated if you go with them...

For an '83? I believe only Edelbrock makes C.A.R.B. certified headers for that year.

BTW, Camaro and Firebird will be the same in this regard.

And, it's "ceramic" coat, not powder coat (although the ceramic starts as a powder, convention typically uses powder coating to mean the polymer process).

what matters is the EO from the CARB department.. even with AIR installed and functioning as it should will get you a failed emissions test because of lack of a decal...

I might add, I've never had to show the decals... then again I was only able to get my car passed the sniffer test once after the engine rebuild...
