Whats the differance magnaflow dual cat setup

Hello thirdgen whats differance between the 49state magnaflow dual cats 23479 and the 50 state smog legal magnaflow 36479 besides the big price differance i cannot spend $700+ on the 50 state magnaflow dual cats , i live in cali and i have a chance to buy a brand new 49 state legal for dirt cheap, Has any cali thirdgeners tried this and pass smog with no hassle . In my opinion its the same dual setup just different part #s and big price difference which makes no sense but business is business

Re: Whats the differance magnaflow dual cat setup

Well I'd assume the 50th state would be cali, from what I've read online if you don't have the proof, receipt, sticker, whatever, you will fail the visual inspection before you get to any tests. All I can find though online says that the one you post as 50 state legal is a universal system, and the 49 is a bolt on for third gen. ALSO, I don't see any listing for the number of states on either?

Re: Whats the differance magnaflow dual cat setup

The California cats contain more precious metals, thus the higher cost. The "catalyst" itself is mostly a blend of palladium, iridium and gold, all precious metals, mixed into a ceramic casting. Naturally, the more precious metals in the blend, the higher the cost. California has more stringent emissions regulations, thus cats on Cali cars need to be more effective, which means more precious metals.

It's the same on every make of car. When we replace a cat, we have to be sure if the car is a Cali car, that we put on a Cali cat. Otherwise, we might end up with a P0420 catalyst efficiency code, due to the less effective catalyst. Real PITA.

Re: Whats the differance magnaflow dual cat setup

Also the diff between the two are the eo number stamped on the cats themselves. So when u get a smog and they do the visual they can see the eo number on the part and not on a receipt that u could have gotten from a buddy or someone else. I installed these cats on my RS and that's how the smog guy explained it to me. Will be taking them out and putting in my straight pipe so I can save it for next time

Re: Whats the differance magnaflow dual cat setup

Magnaflow has pretty much 2 different cat systems for each application, 49 state and Cali - I am a Magnaflow dealer and we cannot ship 49 state cats to Cali addresses, even if it goes elsewhere after landing there.

Cali cats come with special paperwork you must show at inspection, otherwise automatic failure - even if the emissions pass.

49 state is inaccurate. NY needs the Cali cats as well for anything 25 years or newer.

But even the newest 3rd gen is now 26 years old.

Is that all of NY or just certain parts?

From what I understand that can happen basically anywhere if the air quality gets bad enough, that gets into a whole abuse of government power and the state of CA being given undue power in the federal system.

Magnaflow has separate links for the CA and NY cats on the website when you look up the 3rd gen. Not sure what the difference is though

IN anything but the CITY in NY they dont really care as long as the engine light is off and the cat is in place. Never check stickers or part number
