Piecing together a new exhaust, need some help
As I said, I'm putting together a new exhaust for my 84 trans am (not HO) but I need some advice from those of you who are more familiar with this stuff. I originally wanted to do 3" from the headers back but that plan didn't work out so I'm settling for 2.5". Here are the parts I have as well as what I was planning to buy:
Hedman shorties
Magnaflow muffler
Hedman y-pipe (made for my headers supposedly)
Magnaflow cat
Dynomax super turbo cat-back kit (I'm aware of the redundancy, I'll explain this choice)
I was originally going to buy just the 2.5" intermediate pipe that Dynomax sells but then I saw their $75 rebate on the catbacks and that changed my mind. With that rebate, I can get the whole cat-back for just a tad more than the cost of the intermediate pipe I was going to buy (seems like the same one in that kit). Then I can sell the muffler to recover some of the cost. Basically, the end result is the pipe I wanted in addition to hardware and tailpipes for just a bit more than the cost of the pipe or less if I can sell the muffler. It may seem like it's not worth the extra effort for such a relatively small amount of money but I'm nearly broke so every little bit helps.
I already have the headers and muffler (have for a few years now) but have not put them on yet as I plan on doing it all in one shot. The y-pipe should hook up fine since it's supposed to be made for those headers but the rest of the system is where I'm unsure. The cat, for instance, is a universal item which should fit onto the y-pipe but the Dynomax pipe is not slip-fit so that will require some creativity (any ideas?). The muffler I have has a 3" inlet too which will need some sort of adapter to hook up to the 2.5" pipe. The tail pipes should fit fine though. The Dynomax muffler will be sold off to recover some money. It would be easier to use that muffler but I like the sound characteristics of the Magnaflow and prefer to use that. Unfortunately, I bought it early on and the 3" inlet becomes an issue but I'm hoping that can be easily handled.
So, can I put all this stuff together? The current plan is like so:
Hedman shorties
Magnaflow muffler
Hedman y-pipe (made for my headers supposedly)
Magnaflow cat
Dynomax super turbo cat-back kit (I'm aware of the redundancy, I'll explain this choice)

So, can I put all this stuff together? The current plan is like so:
- Hack off the flange on the intermediate pipe and try to mate it with the cat or find a way to put a flange on the cat.
- Find an adapter to connect the 2.5" pipe to my 3" muffler
- Sell the Dynomax muffler to recover some money
- Enjoy the fact that my car no longer sounds like a bus.
