Glass Packs on a camaro?
So im getting my exhaust done thursday at my buddies shop. he is taking my entire system off except the headers and putting true dual 2.5 inch out in front the right rear tire. Ive heard some people say glass packs sound horrible on these cars but saw a fire bird with 9 inch glass packs and thought it sounded pretty good. what do you guys think?

Mufflers don't make care back fire, every time you downshift, like watching aroad corse race the pipes load up with extra fuel and it pops off, you just hear it better with packs.
----
Glasspacks need to be as close to the engine as possiable with a full length tail pipe, only way to do that on a 3rd is to stuff them in the valley between the floor n sides. If you install them all the way in the back like a stock muffler, just forget it. It will sound awful.

Always a one wheel peel unless I drift. I need a posi and maybe a set of gears to get better traction and better 1/4 miles.

See if you can find a posi rear out of an IROC or a 4th gen. What gears do you have in the car now?

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
they're either a 2.73 or a 3.08 because thats what supposedly came in all of the 87's. i heard that you had to do some choping and other work to make a 4th gen rear work.... is that right or is it just simple bolt off bolt on?

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
To be honest im not really sure ive seen it done on here. My 85' came with 3.73 posi/disc maybe try swapping it for one of those if you can maybe hard to find though. 3.73 would really wake the car up.

If your car backfired with glass packs, it does it with flowblasters, you just can't hear it.
Mufflers don't make care back fire, every time you downshift, like watching aroad corse race the pipes load up with extra fuel and it pops off, you just hear it better with packs.

So I had an idea with glasspacks. I bought my Camaro and the exhaust has holes in the pipes and is super rusty. I want good sound but I don't want anything expensive. BTW I have true duals. So I thought I'd cut my pipes right when the down pipes come down and put 2 glass packs. Then have some piping and bend the pipes out the sides right in front of the back tires. What do you guys think about that? I think it would sound good since the glass packs are so close too the engine as you said and the exhaust itself will end shorter than usually. Its a great idea but I hope I have a good idea not just some crap.

Doesn't too much matter; after you discover you hate it, as you surely will, you can cut it all off and throw it in the trash, and not lose much money in exchange for gaining the wisdom; and THEN you can do it right.
Kinda funny up there, "do they sound good on one of these cars" like it makes some kind of difference how the sheet metal above that garbage is wrinkled. Doesn't matter what stickers are stuck on the metal, glass packs STILL sound like crap, like some billybob's hilljack pickup truck; and then when the glass does what it always does after about 50 miles and is no longer there, they sound even worse. It amazes me that after all these years of FAIL with those things, people STILL don't believe it can happen to them. Well it CAN, and it WILL. So yeah, I think your fear that it might turn out to be just some crap, is well justified... I don't think they'll behave any differently for you than for anybody else.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
depends on your age, it sound means to have em exit in front of the tire, but a normal conversation isn't easy to have with the person next to you. I still like the sound but I let other people hear it more then me, by having it point out the rear.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
i agree with putting the pipes out the back cuz it sucks yelling to each other having a conversation ...but then it might be a good thing if the one in the passenger seat is the old lady....hahahaha i have mine at the end going out the back i think it sounds good and throaty its still loud but not bad inside the car

So do you think if i put the glasspacks where i said but keep the pipes out the rear it would sound better?

A fourth gen rear is about 2 inches wider on each side. It will bolt up just fine though just make your tires stick out a little.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
On my TA with a stock LB9 I have a Summit 24" glass pack coming off the Y-pipe where the cat should be and then about a foot long spout off the glass pack and that's it. It was a cheap temp exhaust, but I left it over the summer as it grew on me and everyone likes the sound that hears it. It's not all that loud in the car and you can talk normal and all even with the top's off. I think i'm going to leave it again this season as I'm need to send my money on the Camaro project.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
It would make it stick out 2 inches per side. It looks awful. But if you're tlaking about a car with a stock cam and straight pipes with glasspacks exiting in front of the rear tire, the best way to complete that kind of car is a 4th gen rear with tires that stick out from the car way too far in the back. They go hand in hand.

Which is why I basically don't even drive mine any more; I don't like people treating me like trailer trash just because they look at what I drive.

Sofakingdom, I know you know your stuff and I respect that, but you not drving your car because of what YOU THINK PEOPLE THINK is just kinda crazy IMO. I have a brand new loaded Wranger and I love to drive my cars still-allot of times more that the Jeep, don't care what people think.
back on topic. Are glass packs the best sounding muffler out there-No not most of the time, but they do have a cool old school sound to them on most v8's. I have to do the exhaust on my RS with a 3.1 so I'm not going the glass pack route, it will have a chambered muffler on it so keep the sound at bay somewhat.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
i just love the sound of it idle, plus if i push my car its soo loud ill get pulled over for sure so it kinda keeps me line, i agree with sofa in the fact with people with rusty body stock 305 with the muffler cut off redlining each shift, or the v6 with a glasspack playing v8.
with my exhaust setup it was only meant to be tempory, but i fell in love when my buddy with his 5L mustang came over, and had them both out in the driveway.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
There are some things that are just trashy and reflect poorly on you. Ridiculous mustaches, cars that are primer-bombed, stained undershirts in public, Uggs, and glasspacks on thirdgens. If that's the image you want to present, go ahead and do it. Just understand that it reflects poorly on you AND the rest of us, so we have a vested interest in trying to get you to change your mind.
And I personally think most of you kids with thirdgens have them precisely because they are "cool" cars, and your friends love the obnoxious pipes. You grow out of it with age, dont worry.

Oh jeez I wish I could remember what mufflers were on my car, not quite glass packs just barely baffled really. Louder than hell above 2k if you are on it but damn had a perfect roar when roasting tires at 5k.

WOW some people worry way too much what others think. Sure you want to persent yourself well and the car you drive plays a part in that, but not not having your car sound the way you want becase someone might think less of you-WOW you might just need to take a deeper look inside and see what the real issues are.

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
Guess it all depends on what you need from a muffler, sound comes 2-3rd for me,
how it runs #1
how it sounds to me is 2nd in cabin
how it sounds to others 3rd
Makes me think of the D-bag the other day, im in the turn lane with a blinker on, and the d-bad in his TA has to roll down his window to make sure I can hear his sewing machine train whistles on his exhaust tips, as if I wasn't showing the fear I should so he rolls down his window to check and make sure they are working when its free rev'ed....

Re: Glass Packs on a camaro?
The only reason im putting glasspacks on is for temp fix. I got this car off craigslist and the exaust is so rusty and has so man holes it sounds like a hoopdie rattling junker so I just want a cheap fix that wont sound as bad. I dont want to go get a $700 exaust system now because i need a new hood, paint job, dash pad, and front seats. I respect the fact that glasspacks arent something that should be on this car but i have more expensive things to fix. So my question stands. Will glasspacks sound decent?

I loved my true dual glass packs they actually sounded really good and were loud when layed into but otherwise sounded great at idle
