Glass Hood?

Hi guys, has anyone attempted to build a glass cut out in the hood like on the new Callaway Camaro? I though it would be cool to do after I do my LT1 swap, I will post a picture for reference.

Re: Glass Hood?

Would be very easy. Just need to find the scoop with the clear cutout and then cut a hole in the hood and mount it.

Re: Glass Hood?

Fun concept but all it does is provide a magnifying glass for the sun's heat right on top of your engine.

Good point.

I'm thinking of either doing this to my base model hood, or cutting the shape of the iroc louvers into it and getting glass plates in that shape. This will probably not happen for another month, but I do plan to do one of these two ideas

thats why you can burst an Ant into flames with minimal effort and a magnifying glass right? lol. The glass in the hood would magnify the heat and trap it inside the engine bay like a greenhouse effect.

Somebody on here made some functional iroc louvers out of stainless, I think it was stainless, looked pretty wicked.

I think if Callaway is making such a high performance car, their engineers figured it wasn't a problem.

When you try to set those ants on fire, you have to move the magnifying glass a certain distance from them to find the focal point as possible. The focal point is when the little spot of sunlight going through the lens is at its smallest, so the sunlight/ heat is more concentrated therefore being hot enough to burn the ant.

Applying that logic to putting it on the hood, the glass isn't at enough of a distance and isn't curved enough to have its focal point directly on the surface of the engine.
Will it concentrate the sunlight?
-Yes, however the sunlight won't be nearly concentrated enough to do any sort of damage.

I'm no scientist i'm just spitting out what I learned in science class, but because of how close the engine is to where the glass will be, the space the "Concentrated sunlight" will take up is still so large that I doubt it will increase the temperature be more than 5 degrees.

Re: Glass Hood?

Thats like saying your sky-light in your bathroom will burn you if you walk under it. Or melt the floor....

Or the windows in your car/house. "Look out, dont let the light that shines through the window touch you, It will burn you"

Silly ppl... hehe..

Lets think about things before posting.....

Re: Glass Hood?

Only way it would do it is if you used a big magnifying glass as the piece of glass for the hood, AND had it at the right distance to focus the beam of light. No ifs ands or butts.

It would have to be concave or convex with the engine at the proper focal point. Wont happen with a flat piece of glass.

Yes, it has. In fact it has been attempted many times before, ...and very long ago.

Here is an example of a Thirdgen that one of the sponsors here built:
