Re: DIY Car Ramps

I used my iphone to post this I will add more pics soon with some more detail. The main reason I decided to make these was the ramps I can buy will lift the vehicle 6"-7" off the ground these will fit under my camaro and lift it 10". These do not flex or squeak like the stamped steel ones, I am confident they will hold my F-350. Also since its a ladder style I can wrap a tie down strap around the tire to attach it to the ramp making the vehicle completely immobile.

Re: DIY Car Ramps

You may want a longer platform area at the top of those stands

Re: DIY Car Ramps

Not bad at all.. Great idea. Longer platform would be good, also your welds looks a little cold. If I had to guess I would say you used a 90 to 110 amp flux core wire feed welder.

With welding thick steel you really need your amps to match the metal thickness 3/16" = .1875" would need 188 amps for full penetration on a single pass.

I made car trailer ramps pretty much the same way. 8' long, 17" wide, rungs placed 8" on center. Used 3/16” thick 2”x1” channel for sides
3/16” thick 2” angle for rungs.

I have a Hobart 140 amp gas mig and was even running cold welds with it with a single pass.. A double pass would have done it, but I rather be safe than sorry or dead so I triple pass welded all my joints.

Re: DIY Car Ramps

Not sure whats up with that first pic, but i wouldnt call that weld acceptable, esp if you getting under a car with that.

2nd pic has undercut, which is fine if you wire brush it clean, then do a 2nd & 3rd pass on the weld.

3rd pic looks like a nice good weld.

overall very similar to the car ramps i have, except mine has a much larger wheel platform and when you lay them in position, it has a bar going across the entire bottom with vertical supports the full length of the ramp.

Re: DIY Car Ramps

I spent yesterday steel brushing (wire cup and grinder) and went over all the welds. Ended up triple passing welds. I cleaned them with an 80 grit grinding wheel and wiped them down with acetone and painted them
