Flowmaster American Thunder 80 series 3in. cat back. #17234 from Jegs Racing, bought about 5 years ago. $355.97 back then. I think it sounds great on my car. This is not me or my car but is close to what it sounds like. And yes it "is" that Flowmaster sound. Here's a link =

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

None of the above...

Flowmaster has some good ideas, but their mufflers blow. They all have that dopey hollow tone, drone at highway speeds, and they suck for flow too.

Magnaflow is overpriced, stainless steel is a gimmick, and the polished tips just seem red-neck-riffic. The sound doesn't seem that much better then FM.

Hooker has those goofy quad tips, and again, a chambered muffler...

I've got a vintage Edelbrock RPM cat-back on our Iroc and I like it. The sound is ok, it's a welded turbo muffler, so no chambers, no drone, quiet at idle, louder at WOT. Also the tips look stock, so I don't look like a stupid teenager driving it.

The setup I'm working on now, is a Flowmaster intermediate pipe with a Dynomax Ultraflow muffler, and I still need to figure out my tail pipes. It should be on par with the old Edelbrock, but it'll probably flow better.

Yes,I agree about the tips on the Flowmasters thats why I cut them back. Look alot better like this. At least I think so.

Dynomax is probably the quietest of all the mufflers out there.

To me, this is a chambered exhaust. I never get tired of it.

But as for the original question. I'd say without a doubt Flowmasters are the most popular catback/muffler out there. Used to have it myself.

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

I have to agree with Drew. I've had Edelbrock exhaust on my car for nearly thirteen years now. At idle it sounds close to stock in loudness and tone. At WOT it gets much louder without that annoying drone. If I had the cash to do it over, I'd deffinately check out the exhaust from GMMG. Pricey, but that tone is awesome.

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

I voted for Magnaflow because I like the sound and flow of the straight-through mufflers. To save money, I just bought their muffler and used the Dynomax Walker tail & intermediate pipes.

I have had Dynomax for three years now. Very nice idle and low rpm sound. Push the throttle and Wow! My opinion. Randy

I purchased 3" catback from summit. Then put a powerstick muffler at the end.

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

I use a Flowmaster cat-back system currently. It's 2.5" all the way down to the muffler where it gets abit tighter exiting out at 2" even. I'm eliminating all of it though for a full 3" set-up with headers and one long straight pipe with dual tips.

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

yea im not a big fan of the sound of the flowmasters as far as cab noise. i used to ride around with open headers lol. nothing but the sound of hooker headers, but that was until i found a shop to hook back up my magnaflow. i think the magnaflow sounds good. BTW i dont think anyone asked, are you running just a 3 in catback with stock headers? or with aftermakret headers?

this is a little off topic, but, hey IROC the 5.7L thats a nice yammy. did you ever get a fender eliminator kit for it??

Hooker Aerochamber Catback. It has a pretty tame idle, but at WOT it absolutely screams!

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

The one good thing about the Edelbrock Cat back system I originally put on my beast was the stock style exhaust tips. I liked keeping the stock look. Other than that, I ended up very disappointed. What looked like a thick welded body was just thin sheet metal that started cracking up after just a few K miles. By 18K, I had to replace the chintzy muffler. I went with Flowmaster. Im happy with it though I still plan on true duals in the near future.

The powerstick looks like a pretty cool setup.

Re: Which Cat-Back Do You Use / Plan to Buy

I've been running a 3" cat-back with Dynomax pipes to a Flowmaster 80. I had the Edelbrock headers up front and really love those.

I'm getting a tad tired of the Flowmasters though:

Sound Clip

I'm reading this thread and thinking Edelbrock or Magnaflow at this point. Borla was an option (and suppose it still is) but I'm looking for a quieter start up with a lower exhaust note than these Flows.

Which one would that be?

How would adding 2055 headers change the sound out the tail pipes?? My FMasters is only slightly louder than stock.
