Need help with headers and cam!

Hi thirdgen family, First off ill just say that i've go a 91 TA GTA 5.0L TPI and the motor is bone stock. As for exhaust at the moment I got a 2-1/2 inch exhaust with a cutout. I've got $$$$ to spend and I was looking into getting some headers. Now guys I know many will say "Dump that 305 and drop in a 350", I would, however my 305 has only 60k miles on it and it runs like new. So Im not real sharp on the subject of headers, so anyone have any suggestions on what headers will fit? (I however dont want to pay an arm and a leg for headers as I am kind of cheap)

Another thing Is I wanted to look into getting a cam with the sole purpose of getting a real "Lopey" idle, I had talked to a mechanic a while back and said I shouldn't even go there because I would need to do a complete overhaul of the heads and pistons and stuff. So Is there any possibility I could get a cam that'll work with my 305?

Some questions:
1. Will different headers improve the sound of the motor much?
2. Will I have to completely remove the motor to install the headers?

Thanks guys I appreciate it!!!!!

Re: Need help with headers and cam!

The sound will be night and day over stock manifolds, should notice alittle gain in performance also.

Get rid of the 2.5 exhaust and get 3 inch. With a stock 305 and no plans of seriouse power i would say get edeljunk shorty headers (cheap), and a full 3 inch exhaust, no need for a cutout. Flowmaster will be louder, magnaflow will perform better. I believe both brands are around $350-450 for a cat-back system.

Dont need to pull the motor to put headers on, i do however suggest you WD-40 the bolts the night before removal, If you break a bolt while removing your gonna hate yourself.

As far as the cam, i'd suggest changing the whole exhaust system first then go from there, you might just be happy enough with the tone without a cam

Yes I agree with LS4. Start with the exhaust work first. Your mechanic is correct on changing the cam. You could put a mild performance cam in it without a lot of engine work but if your wanting the "lopey" idle that is produced by a wilder cam setup then you will need major engine overhall and head work. You can make a 305 give a 350 a run for its money. But its like this there will always be someone faster but there will also always be someone slower. LOL
