Y-Pipe help

I had my exhasut installed last summer (headers back) and it sounds great but my y-pipe is way too low. The y-pipe runs from the collectors to the drive shaft valley and the cat and rest of the exhaust run in this area. I know the stock y-pipe on the car ran under the passenger side.

What I'm looking to know is if any stock y-pipes ran down the drive shaft area that might be higher than my custom pipe or are there any that have half the y under the drivers side floor and the other half under the passenger side floor and meet in the drive shaft valley. Also, if anyone knows of an aftermarket y-pipe that would run this way.. This seems to be the only configuration to re-route the pipes that would raise it and get more ground clearance.

Re: Y-Pipe help

Where the pipe comes down off the collectors and bends back towards the rear of the car is where I'm hitting the ground. I've got about an inch of clearance.

Re: Y-Pipe help

Holy Crap!!! 1" of clearance!!!
Sounds like you got ripped off.....
Most shops don't give a damn about you or your car unfortunately...

I got ripped off too, once upon a time.... it was 2" pipe if I was lucky and pinch bent all over the place, even when it didn't need to be.... I blew sparks all over the place because it hung down 2 inches below the transmission crossmember... grrrr

I built a 3" Y-Pipe last year with very little difficulty.
4- 45* degree mandrel bends and a Magnaflow Y-Pipe
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-10798

I have plenty of room but, you could do better with a 2.5" tubing.
I ended up wrapping my Y-pipe with header wrap to keep the radiant heat down as it runs very close to my transmission as intended for ground clearance.... I'm maxed out at this point unless I arch the crossmember. My exhaust runs down the driveshaft tunnel for what it's worth.

I'll have to download a couple of pictures when I get to my other computer.

Re: Y-Pipe help

I just saw in your link you've got long tubes. I have shorty's on my car and I think that's why I'm running into this problem.

Re: Y-Pipe help

Most consider shorties to be easier...
It gives you more options when it comes to angles of attack going under the tranny crossmember.

Good Luck!!!

Re: Y-Pipe help

I might have a shop that can custom make something but I hate putting more money into this exhaust. It sounds really good right now, do you think changing some angles at the y-pipe will make much of a difference with sound?

Re: Y-Pipe help

I doubt it.

It's already a custom pipe, just get it modified for a better fit.

Who cares what it sounds like if you keep smashing the ground with it!!!

How do you think your Engine and Heads are liking the shock of hitting the ground transferred through it?

Re: Y-Pipe help

Well the shop that said they'd do the modification now won't give me a quote and I'm sick of calling them and not getting a reply.

Would something like this corvette y-pipe work? This is very similar to how mine looks now. It's just too low at the elbow where the pipe cuts back.

Here's a video of my exhasut. If you go to about 50 seconds in you'll see the y-pipe.

So on both sides it runs back past the transmission and then meets?

Re: Y-Pipe help

That's about the dumbest way it could have been routed, then. Toss it out and have it redone following the stock routing down the passenger side.

Re: Y-Pipe help

I'm willing to have the y-pipe scrapped but the rest of the exhaust is already ran in the drive shaft valley back to the axle. Would a stock 3" y-pipe of a 350 car work and then just weld another pipe from the outlet to the rest of the exhaust. There would be some gap because I'm also not running a cat in the stock location under the passenger side. My cat is by the axle.

Re: Y-Pipe help

The rest of your exhaust up to the axle is about $5 of tubing and a cat that you can relocate. Nothing to be too worried about leaving intact.

Re: Y-Pipe help

It's more the labor cost I was worried about. I paid way too much in labor for the current setup. It took them about 7-8 hours to do the headers back.

Re: Y-Pipe help

you'd be better off finding a performance shop that cares to build this Y pipe for you. It seems that everyone on here that posts up a Y pipe made by an exhaust shop is unhappy and the quality of work is garbage.

Exhaust work is easy to do and you can get good results if you just have some attention to detail and you're not in a rush.

In 7-8 hours I could do the whole thing myself with the car on jackstands, and I ain't no welder.

Which headers do you have?

Re: Y-Pipe help

I'm very happy with my ypipe. It's a beauty 2.5" ypipe that enhances to 3" and mates with the rest of the 3" exhaust. Has 3"-2.5" collectors. Fits really well between the kmember and oil pan.
However, im building a 385 with a canto pan, which wont allow me to run this ypipe. I have hookers, so if you do too i'll sell you this ypipe for cheap. Shoot me a pm if youre interested.
