Re: headers getting red hot

Mine did that. Turned out my timing was too retarted and it was running too rich. What was happening is that the combustion was still happening as the exhaust valve was open and it was continuing into the headers.

Double check your timing and if its a carb, check your idle mixture screws. Use a vacuum guage to fine tune this. You can go to the manufacturers site to get a baseline setup though.

Re: headers getting red hot

i had a similar issue, my car was running a little rich. didnt want it to starve at high rpm's. but if you have a catalatic converter its posible it could be clogged. will make your car run like hell also. just a posibility

Re: headers getting red hot

ok thanks for clearing that up for me, now i know its caused by the fuel trim being to rich, i have see through plugs for the carb its a holley 670 and the fuel level in the bowls are pretty high, also can mis adjusted rockers cause this ? maybe from it beeing to tight ?

Re: headers getting red hot

I had the same problem when I was using a Holley 670, mine was choke related. Never could get that choke set right, but my headers would be glowing anytime the choke was doing its thing.

Probably not much help, but if your's still has the choke on it, that may be the cause.

Re: headers getting red hot

Honestly, I fixed it by going with a chokeless carb. Mainly because I did a T-5 swap and the vacuum secondaries wasnt working out too good on that setup. Not to mention that on cold starts and the choke doing its thing (headers started to glow within a minute) I popped my clutch line twice.

Only suggestion I can give is to loosen the 3 screws on the choke and turn it either up or down to see if you can get the glow to go away, and be sure the power wire for the choke is getting the 12v it requires. Might also check to see what your idle/air screws are set at. Mine ran best with both 1 turn out. I tried tuning the carb with the vacuum gauge, but either I have a junk gage or wasnt doing it right because it didnt change with the screws all the way in or out. Same thing with my 650 HP, no vacuum changes no matter what I did..besides rev it then it would change.

Still not much help I know, but maybe at least a starting point for ya. If gas wasnt 4 bucks a gallon (premium), i'd make the drive to Indy and try to help ya out on it.
