What is a raspy exhaust sound, and why is it considered undesirable?

Searching out Magnaflow& Dynomax bullets vs. Dynomax Magnaflow can-type turbos, and finding the Texas Speed and Performance "Texas Rumbler too "raspy".

Anyone know of a sound clip of the no-good raspy exhaust example?

Does it sound like an old-school 60's dual glass pack Cherry Bomb system?

I guess I'd call that sound "brappy".

Don't want to sound crude when the swap is finished!

youtube is good for this... you can search for SLP loudmouth on the LS1 fbodys. They are known to be "raspy".

Some consider it undesirable but others like it. I dont mind it all that much but prefer abit less rasp if possible.

Big reason it happens is the shape of the y-pipe and muffler locations. On some of the LSx systems, the ypipe is really crappy and has a terrible merge section where the 2 pipes come together.

Using a good merge pipe like the flowmaster Y pipes or possibly the magnaflo mini y pipes, you can smooth out the flow and really tame some of that rasp.

Some of the rasp comes from muffler design itself tho and those glasspacks of the 60-70's do have that sound. Some bullet style straight through mufflers have that sound too. But on the right exhaust system, you may not have those sounds.

I have bullets on my turbo car. True dual with x pipe and there is no rasp.

non-raspy = burping

raspy = clearing your throat when you have a cold, theres a little abrasion and wind coloring the basic engine sound

not a good/bad thing but a matter of taste, I like a really raspy sounding exhaust personally
