Header AIR Tubes
I couldnt find a whole ton on this in the search, so here we go. The PO of my 85 Camaro installed a 5.7 from an 89 Camaro. The headers he installed have the AIR tubes on them. I have since removed the entire AIR system. Can these tubes be cut and welded closed while they are still mounted in the engine bay? I am just doing a little cleaning up under the hood and would love to eliminate these since they serve no purpose anymore, but dont want to go thru the hassle of removing the headers from the car if at all possible.

Re: Header AIR Tubes
i would say just plug the holes untill you remove or replace them . 1/4" NPT plugs are the size , i have used plugs that were internal wrenching (allen wrench) that looked pretty clean . good luck .

Re: Header AIR Tubes
Well im sure you could cut them and weld them up. then you gotta grind the weld and welding on thin exhuast tubing could end up being a recipe for purchasing new headers without the tubes.

Re: Header AIR Tubes
Uncle Tom, the current headers look like the AIR is welded to them... would i just cut them off and thread the holes for the 1/4 plugs or what?

Re: Header AIR Tubes
Sell them to someone who needs AIR tube headers & take that $ to buy you NEW headers without the tubes.
Saves the buyer $ by buying used headers & I have very little doubt that you could easily sell them for the full cost of buying you new non-AIR tube headers.
Win-win for both parties.

Re: Header AIR Tubes
I will have to read up on how to remove these..... not taking the engine out just for headers.... will also have to clean these up as they are rusted...

Re: Header AIR Tubes
I have never removed an engine in any car to install/remove headers, not even in a 3rd gen.You really wanna cut the tubes & weld the holes with the headers on the engine & in the car? You don't think your gonna get some welding slag "dripping" into the hole & into the header tubes? Only way to get that out is to grind it out, which means the headers have to come out.
Which is why I say win-win for both people.

Re: Header AIR Tubes
Yeah I would chagne the headers too. but I figured you were set. you wouldnt be able to tap them. so welding them was the only other option. buying the correct set is the best option. (check the for sale section i always see headers there)!
