quick question about legality
I have a 1991 camaro RS, 305 V8 tbi sitting in my drive way, that doesnt have a muffer. The car is loud!!!!
is it illegal to drive without a muffler? I live in illinois.
Also, I don't have to pass emissions because the car is over 15 years old.

Re: quick question about legality
I believe it is illegal for cars to be too loud but it is at the discretion of the police. Around my area Ive never seen or heard of anyone pulled over for exhaust but it can be done. Most cops probably wont pay any attention unless they are looking to give tickets. I have many friends that have straight piped trucks and they have never had a problem.

Re: quick question about legality
Technically yes they are required.
From http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/pu...rr_chap12.html
Will it affect you? It depends on the police in your area and how you drive. I drove a '90 Buick Century for 3+ years with a 1/2 dollar size hole in the muffler (rusted out) even State Police would just tell me I should get it fixed and never gave me a warning or ticket for it.
I haven't had an issue with my 4" muffler with straight thru flow and I drove the car 1500+ street miles in the last year.
That being said I believe CATs are still required and the police can do a visual inspection to verify. I've never had an issue with that yet either as I removed mine.
Muffler
A muffler must be on the exhaust system to prevent excessive noise and smoke. This also includes turbine wheels used in the exhaust system of a diesel engine. Cutouts, bypasses and changes to the system to increase noise are illegal.
