Smog pump removal
I hope this is posted in the correct section and gets a fast response because I was hoping to have this done this weekend =P
Anyway, was thinking about removing my smog pump because it doesn't even have a belt going to it so isn't working right now anyway, and is rusty and ugly. Trying to clean up under my hood some to make it look a little better.
My question is if I remove it, what about all those hoses and such that are connected to it. It traced them and it appears there is a hose running to each exhaust manifold (or at least I think that is what it's running to).
Can I safely remove all these hoses as well? And if I do, what about the places where they connect, do I need to cap them off with something?
I was hoping to put some chrome valve covers on this weekend and a chrome breather to flash things up a bit, but after cleaning the engine with a pressure washer and some degreaser I don't think it will really make a difference until I can pull the engine completely out and repaint stuff. Especially the pulleys, they are rusted and such. Can I even repaint those with betls going on them?

This discusses smog pump removal on a serpentine belt car, but the pump removal parts are the same - just disregard the parts about the belt rerouting.
NEVERMIND - the info is not in that article.
The pump has a hard pipe connected to the back, that runs to the AIR valve - all that gets removed. Then, there are tubes up off each manifold - you canb remove those from the manifolds and plug the little holes with 1/4 NPT thread pipe plugs available at any hardware store (you need 8, one for each exhaust manifold tube).
Or, you can leave the small lines on the manifold and plug where they all meet into one piece - there is a check valve there, unscrew it and replace it with a NPT thread cap (I trhink this one is a 3/8 NPT).
Then, one more thing - a stainless steel line from the cat that comes up to the pass side - hack saw it off at the cat, crimp the end shut with vise grips, and using a torch and metal coat hanger, seal the end shut (use coat hanger like solder, and melt it in the crack with torch).

Re: Smog pump removal
No tuning required. just plug off anywhere where exhaust comes off. So the check valves on teh air tubes from manifolds/headers. and then cap off the catalytic converter pipe that feeds it the fresh air.

Re: Smog pump removal
thier is a metal tube that comes down. the smog pump is part of that system. If your eliminating the smog pump. just pinch that closed and weld it or something. you do not need it.

Re: Smog pump removal
I know this thread is a tid bit dusty but am sincerely hoping that someone could help me. i deleted my smog and all..well, i removed the pulley, pump, hoses that connect to the spider thing that comes off the manifolds. i plugged the spider thing off until friday when i order my headers. i knew nothing of the line off the cat so im gonna cut and paste that as well. is there anything else?? when i removed the smog, i did notice that there was more of a "free" feeling and a tiny bit more in the seat feeling but im getting about 8mpg and it takes FOREVER for my car to warm up. not to mention the check engine light that comes and goes after about 5mins of driving. i did my research before removing my smog but i saw none of these things going on with others..PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!!!
