Y Pipe Gasket Question - 92 RS

Can anybody tell me the correct gasket configuration for both the drivers side and passengers side Y Pipe to Manifold connection... I bought two donut gaskets but then realized when I took the old pipe off last night that there is a steel ring that fell out of the drivers side that is like a donut gasket except it is flat on one side and shaped like a donut gasket on the other side.. Was wondering if anybody has an assembly picture of the correct stock setup for gaskets and whatever between the Y Pipe and the manifold on each side... Should there be a steel ring on both sides? Does that replace the traditional donut gasket? Parts houses don't seem to really know.... Thanks...

Anyone? im wondering the same thing. i have a donut on the passenger side, and no gasket on the driver side. There is a rattling / ticking exhaust leak which was improved greatly by tightening the bolts near the exhaust manifold on the driver side.

No gaskets. Flange pulls the flare on the pipe tight onto the taper of the exhaust manifold.

On the driver side, there is no donut gasket. The outlet of the manifold is tapered inward and the y-pipe connection is flared outward. The bolting flange around the pipe (the thing the 2 studs go through and you tighten the nuts against) also has a matching taper that compresses the pipe and manifold together.

The passenger side has a few different configurations, depending on your application. The bare manifold outlet should be flat with a bevel machined into the I.D. of the oulet hole. From there, I know of 3 different options. Option #1 is a double tapered donut gasket between the manifold inner bevel and the y-pipe flare. Option #2 is a cast iron spacer that is flat on the manifold side and tapered on the pipe side. Option #3 is similar to the spacer, but it is a vacuum operated butterfly valve (used for some carburated applications). Options 2 and 3 from the factory did not have any gaskets on the flat machined surfaces between the manifold and the spacer/butterfly valve, however this connection will leak if taken apart and put back together without a gasket. It's been a while, but I don't remember there being a gasket available, however I was able to match one up at the parts store.

Since there are no donut gaskets on these cars, the manifold to y-pipe connections are very difficult to assemble without leaking. Take you time, get both sides lined up and centered and tighten all 4 nuts evenly. If they still leak, loosen the nuts, reposition the y-pipe and try again.
