Catalytic Converter(s) question...
Whats the purpose of Cats, if you don't have to smog? let alone Two cats?!...
my 87 only has One cat and One o2 sensor and i pass smog in Cali.
how many is an 87 350 supposed to have?
my (California) friends' 91 ZR1 Vette requires THREE (3) cat converters...
this guy mentions getting 2 cats for his exhaust on a 2.8 v6 engine:

did the 2.8 really require two cats?
if this is already clarified on another thread i'd greatly appreciate the link cuz i couldnt find the answer i was looking for..thanks!

Re: Catalytic Converter(s) question...
your car came with 1 cat.
In 89-92, 305 5sp and 350 autos came with rpo N10 dual cats which added 10hp due to better flowing setup.
the 2.8 in 3rdgens came with one cat.
Also the more cats, the cleaner the exhuast I guess. I don't deal with this stuff at all.

Re: Catalytic Converter(s) question...
ew, yet another reason why i'm glad i chose an '87...
yeah cats clean up the exhaust (good for smog laws etc) but i'd think itd restrict the engine from functioning to optimum performance. am i incorrect in thinking that?..

In this case 2 cats are better than one.
yeah they do kill a lil power but not enuff on a stock motor to worry about.
You would pick up some power by switching to 2 cats.

Re: Catalytic Converter(s) question...
Not if you get a modern cat. They aren't too restrictive on a street car. Personally I don't like the smell of unfiltered 87 octane, but I digress. 96 Mustang GT has six cats from the factory. Two are light off cats, but nonetheless...
Oh, and its a federal offense to remove a cat on ANY car that came with one from the factory. So basically 1975 and up. The thing is, its very unlikely that you get caught without one if you don't have to take a smog test. But removal is still "illegal".
