I think my muffler may fall off soon...
Alright, I'll summarize, somehow, some way, they passed my '92 Camaro in November, state inspection, exhaust is kinda (The hell with kinda, it looks like it might fall off) rough.
So, basically, how would I go about an affordable exhaust system, that sounds good, and doesn't get loud until about 3,000RPM, so if I'm just sputtering around town or in overdrive it isn't droning like crazy?
Also, I want this to be a full system, was just gonna gut the cat for temporary, but I'd rather just replace it with some high flow unit, may increase cost a little, but I want this done right.
What I've been recommended is this:
replace the cat, do a single inlet 2 inch, dual 2 inch out flowmaster, aluminized stainless with the turn downs so it's hid somewhat underneath the rear... Whatever you call that thing hanging off the bottom of the bumper, air splitter, I think?
Any advise? Recommendations? Ect?
This does not have to be replaced until November of 2012, or, anytime between here and there that it falls off.. In which case, the expression on my face will likely be priceless.
Oh, last question, if the muffler, or say, the whole damn exhaust system falls off, is it safe to drive it home like that, say, ten miles without the back pressure of the exhaust system? And without causing myself to go deaf?
Yes, I am serious about this exhaust system falling off, the hangers are fine, the pipe connected TO the hangers... Not... So much... Honestly it looks like someone shot the exhaust system with a thousand BB's going at the speed of sound.

Magnaflow mufflers are quieter than Flowmasters. Other than that you seem okay

Really? Did not know that, thanks, will keep that in mind.
I want the car to speak to me, not yell at me, ya know?
Now comes the fun part of trying to set aside enough money by November of this year... Oh joy...

I love my magnaflow cat-back. I did Hooker headers, Hooker y-pipe and cat-delete pipe It sounds good even with my gutless lg4. It's quiet until I step on it, then it sounds really good!

Re: I think my muffler may fall off soon...
Was glad to see this thread! I have a quite similar problem with my thirdgen! I have an 82 Firebird S/E, exhaust system was in bad shape when I bought it but it came with a carburated chevy 350 instead of the 305... made it worth buying . Whoever had it previous literally just slapped the exhaust on there and it kinda hangs off the side and the muffler is held on with some wire (pretty crappy attachments). And definitely going to fall off. Any suggestions in an affordable range on what headers and exhaust I can put on there that wont hang off and will let her breathe a little better too?

Re: I think my muffler may fall off soon...
Your in a different boat than I am, there are TONS of aftermarkets for 350's. A lot of Firebird's had dual exhaust, I'm not sure if it was true dual or just a dual outlet muffler like the Camaro's. Either way, best bet, aluminized stainless, I'd say with one pipe, a 3", with a dual 2" outlet flowmaster or walker. Now if you can manage true duals, dual 2 or 2.5" should be enough. I wouldn't say go larger than dual 2.5's 'cause that's basically having a single 5" pipe.
Though I may be wrong, hope someone else takes notice who can help you.
Now myself, I have a '92 RS, V6, slightly different. But, if you look on Summit Racing, they probably sell some nice Hedman or Hooker headers.
