exhaust help. cat converter?
im working on my 89 rs exhaust, as i was tearing out all of the old/stock exhaust i found myself stuck when coming to my catlytic converter.. the tubing coming from it that travels underneath my hood goes to a black box. im not sure exactly the purpose of it or what the electrical wires are. but if someone could tell me what to do with it or what the importance of it is. that would be great. im at a standstill until i know what can be done about this. any advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks

Re: exhaust help. cat converter?
That is the air injection tube from the cat to the black box(diverter valve). Do you still have a smog pump on your car? If so, then you will need to put in a new cat designed for the air injection system. If you want it cleaner and more efficient, get rid of the diverter valve, air injection tube, and remove the air tube and plug the exhaust manifold ports with pipe plugs and when you install the new exhaust, just replace the catalytic converter with a new design high flow converter. You won't have any problems passing smog emissions wise and these cars are so old now, the kid doing a smog test will never know the difference. Oh yeah, if you kill the smog pump, you will need to get a shorter drive belt.

Re: exhaust help. cat converter?
sorry, dont know much about what im getting myself into. a smog pump? i dont know exactly what that is. but i think what your saying (diverter valve) is what im talking about. but you say plug the exhaust manifold.. im running headers now so im a little confused with what your saying. the only thing i have holding that diverter valve to my car is this electrical connection, and i dont know what it goes too and how to disconnect it.. i dont care about it if it doesn't effect my cars performance. all i want is my car to run smooth with the headers im putting on it and the dual exhaust im equipping it with.
