HELP! Headers? Exhaust? Muffler? Cat Converter?

I am building a 1989 firebird for my first car, and my number one priority is that is sounds Deep, and LOUD..Problem is i have no idea on what combo to get for the exhaust system...Do i run a y pipe? X pipe? Which headers do i go with? which muffler? Cat Converted? Or is there a good Exhaust Package you can buy? PLEASE don't just read this and disregard it...i am 16, and it is hard for me to find these things out with little experience...I just want some information on what sounds the best...I was also wondering if there are certain dimensions/specs you should go with that are the best...Please respond and thanks to everyone who does..I work hard every day to pay for this car, and any help would be appreciated...

I recomend Hedman Hedders long tubes and a dynamax dual kit you can get cats and use turbo muffs or glas packs with it.

You can also look up sound clips on YouTube. Do a search for 305 and whatever muffler/other parts that you think might sound good. Not every parts combo is uploaded, but you will get a good idea of what a particular system might sound like. Many posters will also include in their video description the specs of their engine and/or exhaust, which will also help you figure out how closely this might resemble yours if you did this setup on your car. I hope that helps. :-)

I don't know what state you live in bro, but as long as it isn't California you might be able to get away with a Catless Exhaust, Here in Cali you need Cats to pass the Smog every 2 years, because if no cats no pass and no pass means no tags and no tags means you can't drive it legally.

My personal recommendation with only knowing that you have an '89 305 is to go with Flowmaster 80's Series system 3" pipes and if you get tips I like the ones with an angle cut they look Badass not 2" those suck for sound, flow & looks. Headers free up the flow and make your car really loud enough to **** off the neighbours. I like the way my Flowmaster sounds with the original manifolds on and mine has dual cats but yours came in single cat.

YouTube is also a great idea, here's a video of an '89 firebird with Flowmaster, The Quality isn't the best because of the Device used to record isn't top quality but Flowmaster still makes the F-body sound Badass

Re: HELP! Headers? Exhaust? Muffler? Cat Converter?

what did when I was 16 was just cut it off before the muffler hahaha. Cheapest way to get loud :P

But if you wanna go the legit way, get the whole nine yards in exhaust, you'll be glad you did later. Heddman makes good headers and Y-Pipe, depending on where you live you could either gut the cat or replace it with a nice high-flow cat, then get a muffler you like by researching different sound clips on youtube. Personally, I'm going with the Flowtech Afterburner.

Just some ideas for you. Hope I helped a bit, I totally understand where you're coming from being 16. I was the same way and now I'm 18 going to school to be a mechanic lol. Good luck bro.

I have the flowmaster 80 series in my '88 IROC (stock 305 and everything else exaust) and i gotta say, i'm not all that impressed with it. It made it sound a little better than stock, but not much. My dad says he's far from impressed with it. Although i did go with the angled chrome tips. Stainless im told and shown would've been a better choice though. I've seen chrome tips that look almost rusted.
