Catalytic Converter Orientation (305 VIN Code H)
Catalytic Converter Orientation (305 VIN Code H)
Hi, I have a 1984 Trans Am with a 305 (VIN code H, 4bbl) and am replacing the exhaust system from the Y-pipe back. The car did not have a catalytic converter or an AIR pump installed when I bought it. (I plan to install an AIR pump at some point.) After reviewing the service manual and some other material, I am not sure what is the proper orientation for the cat converter with regard to the AIR tube. Should the AIR tube pick-up be on the upper left or lower right (back looking front) . . . . Not sure the attached photos help, but thanks for any insight.

I wana say lower left. But it's been a while since I've seen one with the air pump hooked up.

Tube needs to be back looking front, with the ball & socket flange toward the back of the car.
Is this a 3" cat?

Thanks, and I appreciate the advice - I installed it as suggested (facing inside of car).
As for the cat, it's a direct fit (2 1/4") that I bought at NAPA, part number 15735. All parts for the exhaust system (including hangers) fit well, except for the driver's side tail pipe: the section coming out of the muffler was too short (not enough clearance for the trunk well), so I had to take it to a local shop to have an additional 3" welded to it.
