Was considering removing my flowmaster muffler, catalytic converter, and just have straight pipes going out. Any thoughts? Engine is a stock 305. Wondering if anyone has experience and knows how that sounds compared to the aftermarket flowmaster. Better or worse? Thanks guys

I was told by a friend that the car would sound better with straight pipes...I was skeptical so I'm asking the people who know best haha

 

You can go on u-tube and listen to different sound clips of third-gens with different exhausts and make up your mind.

 

Strait pipe on that or any thirdgen --->WILL<--- sound like crap at anything above -hot- idle...

 

The car will sound like garbage with straight pipes. Keep your muffler.

 

It will be loud but have no tone to it. Sounding good > loud

 

Agreed with the rest, my 89 Camaro had a 327 when i bought it with longtubes and straightpipes. Sounded like a farm truck.


On my old 91 RS we swapped a bad cat out with a glasspack and made a Y pipe at the back to eliminate the muffler. Bone stock 305 TBI and it actually sounded pretty good. That may be something to try.

 

It will also make slightly less power in most cases. There was a mag that did a dyno test on like 20 different mufflers along with straight pipes. The straight pipes were loudest and actually made the LEAST power.

Why? Muffler also acts as a expansion chamber, it reflects exhaust pulses back up the pipes and actually helps to increase cylinder pressures when tuned correctly. There's a whole bunch of science behind this theory.

 

I found a few, but it was so loud and the video quality was ***** I couldn't really get an idea of what it sounded like. (good/bad)

low compression, small cammed small block with straight pipes = ugly noise.

 

you will lose torque and it will not sound that great

 

Mufflers also cause a scavenging effect

 

I ended up leaving the cat and the stock piping and just cut the muffler off. I know that each is to their own on this one, but I don't mind the sound. It is a lot deeper, will admit that it sounds a bit like a truck, but still throaty. Quite reasonable levels until you get passed 2500 RPM, then it will really start to roar. I honestly have not noticed any power loss and have still managed to get 31 MPG on a trip from Wisconsin to Arizona running premium.
