Is the price good??or too much?

So on my 84z28 my cat is just done.......i know this because I already took it off.....I called a local shop and they wanna charge me about $200 to weld on one of theri high flow magnaflow cats 3"inlet/3"outlet...is this a regular price or too expensive?

I would buy a cat myself online but summit and jeggs cannot ship out cats to CA....This sucks!Any way you guys might know around that?thanks!

Re: Is the price good??or too much?

DO NOT weld on a cat!!!!

THINK about it... next time it, or either the piece in front of it or behind it, needs replaced, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO THAT?

$200 installed is about right though. Just, get em to do it WITHOUT WELDING IT IN PLACE. That's nothing but job security for the guy wielding the blue wrench.

As far as the difference in those 2 cats, can't say.

Easiest way around the CA shipping rules is, have it shipped to one of your friends in a nearby state, and go visit em when it gets there. Somebody in Yuma or Lake Havasu or Vegas for example.

Re: Is the price good??or too much?

Sounds like, in addition to a cat and ceramic-coated headers, it's time to be looking at a cat-back exhaust, then. If it's already been hacked on so much that it can't be put together like it belongs, then there's not alot of sense in trashing your nice new stuff on its behalf, eh?

Take a look at the better setups, like the Hooker Aerochamber systems for example; easy bolt-up, that you can do YOURSELF and not have to pay anybody to create permanent job security for themselves using YOUR money to guarantee that you'll have no choice but to keep on paying them in the future.

Re: Is the price good??or too much?

Use SS band clamps to hold the cat in place. Never weld it.

I weld a lot. Just because I have an issue with the cat or the exhaust before or after the cat doesn't mean its ideal to get up under the car and start cutting and welding. I would much rather turn a few bolts and remove whatever needs replacement.

Walker stainless steel band clamps. They make them for but joints, lap joints, and slight reduction joints. Great asset to an exhaust system for maintenance down the road.
