In my opinion, there is NOTHING that will make your V6 sound like the muscle cars of old.
Kee it quiet and focus on other things. You need eight cylinders to sound like the old school muscle cars. :P

its your car, but please dont. its embarrasing to us other 3rdgenners on the road when you have loud puky sounding exhaust, let alone a 6banger....but its your car, and no you will never sound like a v8 when you dont use a V8!!!!

If you buy a loud enough sound system and play some muscle car exhaust sounds while driving, it would sound like your car had V8 rumble.

Wow I was hoping I was gonna be the first to say swap in a v8. silly me. but it is true, there's no way to get a really nice muscle car roar without a v8 under the hood. that being said, I'm sure there are posts on here talking about the nice systems you can get for a v6. just

I've always thought that chev v6s sound pretty good with exhaust at idle. Problem is anything other than idle and they sound horrendous.
Ha, I just thought about an electric cutout wired to a window switch activated only at idle...

I have Pacesetter headers, 2 1/2" (empty cat) back to a Flow master super 40 single in/out. It sounds pretty good for a little 2.8.

puky, pukey. you know the sound people make when they puke. and yes its flat out embarrassing having shitty loud exhaust comming from an engine without purpose of power, just transportation. kind of like 4 bangers with fart cans. same exact thing. it makes these cars seem like the exhaust is missing, or broken. erg i cant even describe it. guess its just personal preferance.

Not sure what system you should go with, but I would say stay away from a glasspack. A lot of people like them but my .02 is that glasspacks on a v6 = a pissed off bumble bee.
Do some searching on youtube for systems. Just for 2.8L exhaust or v6 camaro exhaust, etc. Find something you like the sound of, and do it.
Flowmaster 80 series: Glasspack: Straight Pipe: What cIaRmOaCrZo was talking about:

I have a four cylinder Mustang. The funny thing is, I have not tried to make it sound like a 302 it is nice and quiet. My straight six trucks true duals and if you heard it you would think a tractor was coming down the road. My Firebird has the motor to back up its exhaust.
Wen you drive down the road, people are going to laugh their asses off when the hear you go by. I always do, and so does everyone around here. With the exception of the people who don't like loud cars in general.

Re: how can i give my car a muscle car roar
I saw a shop do that. It was on one of those pimp my ride shows or something like that and they mounted speakers under the car and then ran them to a module that was in the interior where you could select the type of car you wanted it to sound like (ferrari, cobra, big block camaro, small block camaro, etc) and the module was also connected to the tach so as you reved the motor it played the corresponding RPM sound from the motor you wanted it to sound like. Was pretty cool, but it probably would have been cheaper for them to just put a v8 in whatever car it was...

search for "3500RS" on Youtube, my V6 isn't too bad sounding.
only difference is that there is a few grand worth of engine before the exhaust...

i have an 87 Camaro... needing exhaust work to get cats to pass inspection... currently have true dual exhaust.. with no Cat Converters. The shops are saying theres some shitty law that prohibits 2 cats being put on a vehicle that comes factory with one... So my question is, being forced to go back to factory set up...what would be a good exhaust size to go with for a carb'd 383 stroker, with a good balance of sound and performance?

it'll keep up with v8 cars. Not heavily modified ones, but still.. not bad for a lil 3.1

For what it's worth. Most v6 motors today will smoke the doors off of the old v8's of yesterday. As for a muscle car sound, headers and quality exhaust on a v6 is better than stock, but you still need the extra 2 cylinders to get that muscle tone.

Thanks Red Rock and Evilemokid94...
Im kinda being forced to revert back to the stock set up but want a bigger pipe.
Just dont want to go too big to the point that i start consuming more gas... or some other ill effect. this car will be a daily driver...for now...

, everyone that wanted a 3rd gen when it was brand new didn't want a 350. Plus, the 350 didn't come with a manual transmission.

Re: how can i give my car a muscle car roar
yeah that and you couldn't even get a 350 until 87 (halfway through the production run of thirdgens), and even then only in an IROC with an auto, and not in a z28 until 91, as the z28 as a stand alone trim spec disappeared in 88-90 because of the IROC-Z28 replacing just Z28. which i don't count as a Z28 but an rather an IROC. but you know hp was improved to 15 over the 305 so yeah still totally worth it especially with the auto rather then the 5spd, however a 305 in 91 had more hp then a 350 in 87, and exactly the same hp rating as 350 in 88

There is a V-6 forum just under the break board.
Something tells me it will help you with your questions in general.

Re: how can i give my car a muscle car roar
You need to make your own thread instead of hijacking someone else's that has absolutely nothing to do with your question. Major violation of message board etiquette. Regardless, if you dont even know what size pipe you need, and you say things like "I dont want to get worse fuel mileage with a bigger exhaust", I have a hard time believing your 383 is putting out more than 250hp and a stock setup will probably be fine for it. Making big power numbers is hard regardless of the cubic inches, you really have to know what you're doing and make investments in the right areas to break 300hp with an sbc of any displacement.

okay hi to all i have an 89 camaro 305 tbi and i was wondering if i could use the flowmaster 10 series muffller 1 inlet with dual outlets even though its not a crossflow muffler, i intend on hooking the cat pipe to one of the dual outlets and have a pipe running out of the other outlet and another pipe running out of the inlet like the crossflow setups. will this work Please give FEEDBACK!!
