'70-'81 Trans Am Exhaust Tips
Hey guys, just kicking an idea around in my head today. I'm curious if anybody knows if the '70-'81 Trans Am Exhaust tips are compatible with our third gens, more specifically my '86 still with stock exhaust (for now). I'm usually against mixing generations, but love the look and am thinking about getting a pair if it would work.
Here's a quick 'shop of what my car would look like with them on...

if your doing both sides, I'd say go for it! always wanted to see it done, you will have to either get a shop make the pipes or custom fab them yourself

Wow, that car is stunning.
Pretty much made my mind up now that I want to try this. So does anyone know if the stock 70-81 tips will fit on my '86 or is custom fab the only way to go here?

WOW, I have a 79 400 4 speed bandit but I love that 3rd gen with the snowflakes and splitters. That car is awesome. I have a iroc but I put these tips on it that are shaped like the chevy bowtie emblem. I want that trans am or one just like it. That is what the snowman should have driven in the 3rd bandit movie. Much better looking than what he drove.

they would fit, but they wold be at the rear of the bumper, not sides, if you have the stock muffler with dual outlets, you can have a shop fabricate the tail pipes to work. IIRC where the muffler is, all you need is 2 straight pipes, 2 90 degree bends, and 2 more more straight pipes, not sure of the length tho

Re: '70-'81 Trans Am Exhaust Tips
Thanks for the pics/info guys! I had forgotten that the 70-81 tailpipes were at the sides, so yeah I'll have to get that done for sure. Not that big of a deal because I want to get a new exhaust next spring anyway so I'll just have to do this all at once.
Love that 2nd gen steering wheel too motobooks, and DAVE your '91 looks incredible! Those pics are great and will be a huge help when it comes time for me to do my tips. Most generation swapping imo looks tacky but these tips just work on our cars I have to say.

Those are the ones. I have had mine about 10 years now and they still clean up great. Good product. Cannot wait to seem them mounted.

Re: '70-'81 Trans Am Exhaust Tips
New exhaust and tips are finally installed! Still not happy with the positioning yet, but I'm going to play around with it. Think I need to raise them up and push it back a bit.
But so far so good! Very happy I made the decision to buy these tips!

Also installed a new Flomasters 80's Series muffler as well. Only in it a couple hundred dollars between the tips, muffler and new tailpipes and it makes such a big difference. Gotta say I'm loving the way my car's exhaust looks/sounds right now.

Those tailpipes are looking pretty good. Yea it is just a matter of playing with the angle of the pipe until you find a look you like. I like the car it is pretty sharp and definetly works with this look.

These all look pretty good. Considering these in place of the tips that came with the Flowmaster system on my car.

Re: '70-'81 Trans Am Exhaust Tips

OP has a nice car, and the 2nd Gen split tips are a good idea, but judging by the pics, i would say that they hang down a little too far. on the red car (DAVECS1) it looks more right because they don't hang down quite so far (just my opinion.)
2nd Gen exhaust tips; 2nd Gen steering wheel; even [17"] Snowflake wheels in the absense of Formula or GTA wheels in larger sizes - in and of themselves i think these are good, tasteful mods and i would not hesitate to do these mods myself. what does not suit me though, is turning 3rd gens into 2nd gen tribute cars. i would just buy a 2nd Gen before i did that.
