Upside Down Headers?

During my engine swap I took the long tube headers from the donor vehicle. The problem is that the pipes don't fit my frame. I decided that I could just flip the headers upside down (since they still bolt on that way) and then get some pipe and run the exhaust back down under the car. Or get a little bit of pipe and make some nostrils in my hood and run the exhaust out right at the back of my hood. Anyone have any other crazy ideas? Or is this whole notion a bit too crazy?

I though about that. Which led to the redirecting or throwing it off to the side.

Well I'm back at it today. I still have to get the engine all the way in the car. I'll upload some pictures when its done

Could just get some differant headers. But sure cut holes in the hood and have your exhaust set up like a pull truck LOL! This I have to see.

Haha. Get some super long exhaust tips and put little stacks on my car. God that'd be awful.

I was just going to say that, I love flappers. I wish the guys that have the diesel truck with stacks would run flappers. I was walking out of work last week and the Shred It truck was out front and I hear ting, ting, look over and there was a flapper on the stack-I had to just smile.

Re: Upside Down Headers?

What eninge are u using? Why can't you just use the proper manifolds or headers for the car?

Forget pipes out the hood, its a total failure in every way.

350, because I hate manifolds, and because I don't wanna shell out the money for headers when I already have a pair.

Re: Upside Down Headers?

I might just go headers (upside down, because its cool)- elbows- mufflers under the car. So I'll have some pipes really close to the firewall...

Don't listen to the naysayers! It's your car. If you want to do something nuts with it you can. It's a free country. Sort of. So if you want to run the risk of choking, being deafened or ridiculed or even getting a ticket or two go for it. It could not possibly be worse then 24" rims with 30 profile tires on a hi rise Monte Carlo. Please post pics.

if I where thinking of doing it I would go to junk yard and get a trashed Hood then if you don't like it or change your mind for whatever reason you still have your original Hood to put back on it just some food for thought

This is a good idea, but on a street car I doubt pipes out the hood is going to fly with the cops.

Re: Upside Down Headers?

Through the hood, chrome mini truck stacks (with flappers) and a roof mounted train horn! Not a weedy little truck horn. There's a whole subculture that hide train horns in their cars. Google it.

Re: Upside Down Headers?

Running them through the hood isn't a good idea because

1. The exhaust is blowing will be blowing right at the windshield..
2. You will have an extremely loud car.
3. You won't be able to park it outside if it is raining.
4. You will be cutting your hood to make holes
5. It might be a safety issue because they will obstruct your view

If you are going to run an elbow you are going to be spending quite a bit on piping to make it run back under the car.. You would be better off just to get a cheap set of headers that are made for your car.

Re: Upside Down Headers?

Everyone who is saying that I'll be sucking down exhaust.... If I did put the headers out the hood I would make tips that run the exhaust down the side of the car... Not so it'd be blowing exhaust into my face.

Ok then how would you open the hood if the pipes wrape down over it and over the fenders? Like was said you will have way more money and time in trying to make a crazy exhaust set up with the headers you have then getting a right set of cheap headers or manifolds. I'm all about custom and thinking outside the box if it's done right and going to make the car look better, but the idea's you have a just crazy and never going to look right. I'm not trying to be a downer, but come on man-somethings should never be done.

Bolt the headers onto the exhaust pipes. Gasket the connection and unbolt it if I wanna take the hood off. Or put it up.

So if you want to check your oil, add washer fluid, or other wise look at your engine, you'll have to unbolt your exhuast?

It was said once before. Nattering nabobs of negativism! The lines are not just there for coloring inside but for crossing now and then. If it doesn't work out it can be undone.
