they used 2 1/4 inch pipe because they said they could not bend the 2 1/2, like I wanted, so the 2 1/2 inch collectors go into bent 2 1/4. it is flush on the backside of the y pipe but the areas that I have taken pics of are just fill in weld because the collector would not fit into the y pipe they made.

a shop did this?
If so i'd take it back and demand a refund. that's unacceptable.
The biggest issue i see is not the pipe size, it's the welding quality.
Second is the way they Y'd the system.
Third would be the pipe size..
I'd demand a refund, then buy an aftermarket Y pipe and install it, then have a different shop weld it in to the rest of the system.

I think that its good for 20 horsepower and 20 foot pound of torque to go from a badly bent up 2 1/4 inch setup to a mandrel bent 2 1/2 inch y pipe
Re: how much horsepower do you think this is costing me?
Just for the record, a friend stuffed an LS6 big block chevy in his 3rd gen Camaro and has 3" duals fabricated from headers to rear bumper.
Dual 3" over the axle, granted, it was a super tight fit, but your shop is telling you that 2.25" is all there's room for?

Re: how much horsepower do you think this is costing me?
so $12.5 dollars a horse power does not sound bad but I spent 285 for the Y pipe which they kept at 2 1/4 all the way to the catalytic convertor. then ran 3 inch after the cat. the hooker areochamber muffler sounds so week and the power is not there because my engine is not breathing right. the intake is a ported upper plenum, ported slps, ported lower intake. ported 305 heads with 194 valves so I have like 10:1 compression. lt4 hotcam, hooker headers and it just seems like there should be more power to be had and the muffler is soo quiet. that 2.25 crap has to go.

It is hard for a shop to bend 2.5" through the stock routing, it's much easier for an aftermarket company that has a CNC mandrel bender to get it right.
About 15 years ago i had a shop tell me the same thing on my '82 T/A. Years later I went from a similar 2.25" Y pipe and shorty headers to 2.25" TD's and longtubes. It was truly a night and day difference.
You can pick up some mandrel U bends from Summit, some flanges and a case of beer for a crafty buddy to make something for you. It's not that hard, just takes time and the right tools.

I am not sure what is worse the merger or the 2.25
T mergers suck.

I am gonna see if I can get the exhaust shop to at the very least put the new y pipe on for me.
the junction at the back of the y pipe, right after the two pipes become one, I want 3inch to my catalytic convertor. right now there is 2.25 going into a 3 inch cat

That looks alot like the job that was put on my car. Dont know who done it. I had it fixed quickly.
If you think it looks bad on the outside, wait until you look in the inside. Mine had about a 1" hole torched into it. Thats all.
If that was the best that I could do, I wouldnt even do it.

Glad I clicked this thread. Needed a good laugh today. That is a miserable repair. I can make a better exhaust repair in my garage with a hatchet and elmer's glue.

Why not buy $100 worth of bends and weld up your own?
In this picture, I tacked it in place then took it down to the bench, grinded my tack welds and fully welded each connection. It's 2 1/2" into a flowmaster Y collector which is 4". Then I reduce to a 3" catback.
