What are the correct parts to buy?
What are the correct parts to buy?
Hi
I have / need a "special" exhaust system because I live in Switzerland. Now it is quiet rusted and I'd like to replace it. But I don't know what to buy except for the usual parts (end pipes, big muffler and the long pipe). But I have three more. Especially the one that's in the middle pipe). Looks very odd... is this a resonator? How do I find the correct part? Because in Switzerland these mufflers cost around 150$ each.
Have a look at the picture. Also if I have to buy standard / universal mufflers, what size (diameter of in- and outlet) do I have to buy?
Thanks a lot
Thomas

I've never seen one like that. If that's stock, it's an export item. Here in the states, we don't have that front resonator right behind the catalytic converter, nor the two extras at the rear.

That's crazy. I've never seen an exhaust like that for a third gen. I wouldn't even guess that it would fit!
Re: What are the correct parts to buy?
Yes, it was an export car. It depends on how it was sold here in Switzerland. Many of the third gens around here also have the normal catback without these mufflers, unfortunately not mine. It's a pain in the a.. if one part is rusted.
I've seen now that the resonator has to be no 24201 from Walker. That was when I bought the car. But when my mechanic had to replace it, he got another one, it seems. I couldn't get to the numbers for the two mufflers at the end but should be able to find one using the length and width measurements.
The system fits but the end pipes are not in the correct location. When you look at my car from the back the pipes aren't really the same distance from the side of the car. That's because the mufflers have to be placed the way you see it in the picture, otherwise it wouldn't fit under the camaro.

So do you need to maintain that system? You could easily get a cat back from any major brand like Flowmaster, Borla, etc. and bolt it right in.
Re: What are the correct parts to buy?
It's in my registration document for this car. So when I have to show the car at the vehicle inspection they look for these four mufflers unfortunately.
I thought of buying a custom made stainless steel catback system that would last me for 20 years. But then I think, for the money I can replace the "normal" system three times in 20 years... and the car is in quite bad shape so I don't think it won't be worth it.

Well, if I were you, I would renew my registration with that system then remove it and put the one you want on there.

It has something to do how the car was imported from the USA back then. It has the type number X in my registration, so it wasn't a direct import I guess. Then the cars have to pass special noise tests and if it's too loud you have to use more mufflers. I think once they're on you can't change that.
Re: What are the correct parts to buy?
So you know the laws here in Switzerland? ;-) Well maybe it's possible. At least it's gonna cost something. Every change in the documents costs. As long as I know what types these mufflers are, it's not a big deal leaving it this way.

My point is who is going to know you changed anything after you get it inspected?
Re: What are the correct parts to buy?
My registration document says it has 4 mufflers. Every time I have to show my car at the vehicle inspection, first thing is: they want to have my document and they look for special regulations for my car. That's Switzerland...
The first time I went to the inspection they saw the mufflers that weren't in the document then (I didn't know anything about it back then). Then they made a noise measurement with this system (it's not allowed to be louder than 75 db with 3000 rpms in a 7 meters' distance). Once that's done it will stay in the document and as far as I know can't be canceled anymore.

Re: What are the correct parts to buy?
Yeah, but after the inspection, can't you go home and put in the system you want. Is this an annual thing?
Is it possible to revise the documents?

Re: What are the correct parts to buy?
The inspection is every second year. So, I'd have to place the other catback somewhere... that's quite big, I don't have that much space.
The other thing is... if there's an inspection by the police somewhere on the road, I might run into trouble. Also if I'm in an accident... if I change anything on my vehicle my insurance could subrogate against me.
